Here the review:
Like most people who end up on this site, I was looking for a bike mount for my iPhone 5. The top priority for myself the grip of the phone to the bike itself. After all, I do not want to poor roads or after driving over rails or curbs must unlock my smartphone from the asphalt. Therefore dropped out for me all reasonable solutions with O-ring or simple plastic hooks from the outset. Ultimately, I chose the Wicked Chili Rain Case.
After a few trips (incl. Two falls) I've gotten behind me, I'm almost completely enthusiastic about the case.
The iPhone sits really fit and safe for my understanding the case with silicone insert. The protection of the camera on the back and the touch screen to take in the case glued slightly stronger plastic sheets. This should be to protect my eyes enough to dust and water. Operation of the touch screen remains intact, even if already (as in my case) a screen protector is applied.
The holder of the Case is fixed with screws on the handlebars. It is screw with M5 thread, each screwed into a hexagon nut (ie no plastic mating thread). The holder should be suitable for handlebar diameters to 33mm according to the description. Since my handlebar tapered to grips and I would not let you through forward over the handlebars, the iPhone, I opted for the free space on the stem. This has a more angular cross-section and the dimensions of 35mm x 32mm with me. Even if the amount would only 33mm, I maintain that a secure attachment without the use of additional material would be accomplished. In my case I used two Bushes with D10, d6 x16 and correspondingly longer screws. A few slices M5 should it do well here. The holder is located now rock solid on the stem and forms the basis for the case. For free adjustment of position and angle of the iPhone a ball head with lock nut is used. Even if I put the nut up to the stop and the ball therefore maximum clamp, slip or the iPhone twists during vibrations caused by driving over cobblestones or dirt roads. This can be seen also in the video on the test drive. The phone tilts from the starting position until the rear stop of the ball stud on the mother. That's not nice, but does not constitute a danger to the fall of the phone. After a bumpy passage, the device must simply be turned back to the starting position.
On the adapter plate on the ball pivot the case is finally plugged and latched. This connection seems to me to date quite stable and safe. However, it must sooner or later (since it is the interlocking of two plastic parts) to wear, and thus come to the release of the locking effect. If the time has come, I will know how to help me either by cable tie or by directly screwing the two parts. But currently the latching works very well and safe and provides in my eyes no penalty is.
What I definitely think shame is the fact that the headphone jack is not fully usable. While it is bold in the product description, but I find it very unfortunate that with such a great product is not even this last detail was considered. The solution would have been a longer by about 10mm Case with more air under the iPhone. The pennies in additional material costs I would like to be paid. The grommet is indeed already available. Drum it is: to utilize my sport headphones nevertheless easily I'll know me here to help with a scalpel and the good old Dremel)
Meanwhile, the provider has responded on this point and has a holder with accessible headphone jack.
Now even my list Pros and Cons:
+ Stable and safe acting Case
+ Case acts definitely dust- and splash-proof
+-Fit silicone insert for shock absorption
+ Given full operability of the iPhone
+ Connection for charger cable
+ Rugged mounting for handlebars
- Clamping the ball joint made of plastic and is therefore not absolutely fix lockable
- Latching plastic and thus permanently susceptible to wear
- Not be installed on each handlebar / stem without additional material
- Headphone jack is not fully usable
All in all, the negative points are not beautiful, but get me in particular with regard to the price / performance ratio to only one star deduction.
Finally, I present the product, despite minor shortcomings, a strong buy recommendation, since I'm on bike rides around my iPhone not worry.
I would recommend the product for easy touring riders on road, cycling, field or forest road fully. For the real mountain bikers and downhill riders it is certainly also available, but I would still additional security measures (pinning the ball head, screwing plate and Case).
In my two crashes by bike (1x mountain bike downhill on rough gravel, 1x with the cross bike on asphalt), the latching of the Case solved on the holding plate. This ultimately led to scarring on Case - however my iPhone remained completely undamaged. Thus, the product meets the exact purpose for which I bought it - absolutely great!
Everything has now been said or not said, can be looked at in my video. These are my first video review and I have tried it just to answer the questions that I have asked themselves me before ordering. I hope that video is helpful for you.
