The story takes place again in recent years, I do not know 100% but I think so to 1915-1925. The date fits perfectly again to the story, Mrs. Bray's just a master of historical paranormal! It is about divine powers, a murder case that needs to be solved and to the paranormal or occult. I do not want much more immersion in the story, because I would have to go back too far and spoil otherwise. Aufjedenfall succeeds the author again, like to bring them closer in their other works, tension, romance and the mysterious to the reader. What is new is that there are in the book more horror elements as their other books. When Gemma Doyle trilogy there were magical dark beings who I already conjured a shiver down the spine. But in this book come but "harder" stuff to light, but fits to the events.
The story ever takes its course and is not slowed down by meaningless sentences or todgeschlagen too much kitsch. It does happen romance, but that is really only incidental. It is mostly about the characters and about the murder, which constantly leaves you wanting more. Libba Bray has not lost its unique narrative style, it often creates tension and brings the reader to pull up, and other times to the eyebrows. I enjoyed it a lot of fun further reinzulesen in the story and it did not a single page that I found boring and have flown over or have even skipped. And I want Libba Bray praise, but that it has the creepy song from Naughty John thought since I can not sleep as well, thank you very much! ; P
Not only that there are more horror elements, for me, was also re-writes the author from the perspective of more than one person, and even from a male perspective. I still can see only through the eyes of Gemma, but in this novel there are numerous figures play an important role and from which one learns not only the past but also witnessed how to develop their personalities. It is particularly stood out, so I think Mabesie. I think all the characters of course great from Evie to John Hobbes, and back to Theta, Sam and Memphis! But Mabesie me so Anne reminded of Gemma Doyle, and I loved it sooo! ;) I have Mabel now closed already in my heart!
As mentioned above, I also like the time in which the story takes, everything seemed very glamorous and it is also the time of the Jazz! Libba Bray has at the end of the novel mentioned that they had to do a lot of research in order to represent anything good can as it is now in the final product. Although it is tedious but that's why you can imagine the world as well. It's amazing how she describes individual streets and shops, it feels right in the time offset in Evie and her uncle wants to live. It acts by no means thought but as if this book is based on a true story (please do not! XP).
The book cover with its purple hue I find very nice and also the character with the eye has been well chosen, matches the history and dreams of the characters, also it's simply decorated with the design of New York in the background. I'm curious as strip 2 is ausschauen, and especially how this will call!
But now I come to the point, why the book did not get full marks from me, perhaps it may have for one or other sound banal but for me the point plays a big role. I found it a pity that some characters with others not have interacted. For example, I would have found it good if all the "Diviner" had fought against Naughty John and not just certain people. Although you can learn something from each person, and here and there they meet well, but I did something missing the interaction between them. Somehow it's hard to explain ... I think it will look rather different in the second volume, and that this strategy has been specially chosen for the 1st volume. Is nevertheless a pity ..
Conclusion:
Once again was able to convince my favorite author! Libba Bray remains a champion of the historical paranormal! The story is told in an exciting and mysterious, the magical elements and the creepiness are also included. In addition, the reader is transported into an interesting, authentic world in which also wonderful characters live. The writing style is easy to read and liquid and can even be started not stop. Who is already Libba Bray fan who should definitely set the novel, and for all who do not know the author: Shame on you! It is to go into the world of "Diviners" time! Here and there I rediscovered some elements of Gemma Doyle Trilogy, also a great number of which you should not miss. It's nice to know that evolve over time also authors and you can be there live when this happens.
