Currently running at me a Brother HL-5140 laser printer, Brother HL-5170DN laser printer, Brother HL-3040 A4 color laser printers and LED CNG1 a Brother MFC-7820N multifunction laser printer (fax, scanner, copier). Over the years, one thing has definitely signed: Always use original Brother consumables (toner and drum). Compatible products have been conducted continuously failing. The best were there still the Xerox products.
I had already printers from HP, Epson and Canon, but I am now stranded at Brother, because I get a device at a good price, the prints and prints and prints ...
But now the HL-5450DN itself:
Actually, I first picked up the Brother HL-2250DN laser printer, but then found the sum too many negative aspects. Too loud, too high consumption costs and stripes when printing grayscale. For the low price of the HL-2250DN would be for a fast network duplex printer for an occasional expression have been perfectly acceptable, but obviously I'm probably a bit spoiled by the other Brother devices, which is why I then but at twice the price the HL 5450DN bought.
And what can I say? That's him, my printer! Without long warm-up he goes after a few seconds on the issue of the first few pages, which are spat with 38 pages / minute. I have to print many fast times 60-70 pages, which is a tangible gain in speed.
I looked at the printouts with magnifying glass and linen tester and can not see any impropriety. The fan is much quieter than the HL-2250DN and stops after a short time. The term itself comes with the same wheel right to enter the all my other Brother printers, but at a network printer I also want to hear from some distance (eg through the open door of the adjoining room), that the pressure takes place. The printer itself can indeed something stand aside.
I was surprised by the web interface. While still approximately the same as the Web Interface HL-5170DN, HL-3040 and MFC-7820N is used in HL-2250DN, HL-5450DN the times finally got a new one that can be secured with a password, but does not have to! In SoHo area could you give up love.
It also extensive workgroup features are available, such as email notifications to the administrator about IP filtering, location information, user restriction by user name or login and PIN with side constraints etc.
For me it is important that the paper tray is a closed cartridge so that the printer also in operable condition is a closed unit and not look like a tattered chicken because a Paper tray must be open or this project into the room such as the HP LaserJet Pro P1102w, Samsung SL-M2022W / SEE or Dell C1660w.
The manual bypass tray has a large pull-out shelf and accepts not only single sheets but also up to 50 sheets at a time or 3 envelopes. As befits a printer with the ability to print envelopes, can be found there also the envelope icon for the correct positioning of the envelope.
I always assumed that befits so, but was informed by the HL-2250DN that envelope printing is indeed described in the manual, but there is no indication on the printer to the correct alignment.
Of course, this printer is much more expensive (currently twice the price) as the HL-2250DN, but mathematically it is worth the extra cost if you actually use the printer, due to the favorable relative consumption costs.
Will I print only the 3,000 pages which already allows the HL-5450DN in the basic equipment, I need the HL-2250DN already buy more toner and come incl. Equipment Price on about 150 euros.
I expect now to EOL the drum of the HL-5450DN, ie 30,000 pages, then this cost me 480 euros with toner, the HL-2250DN but already 820 Euro.
That the HL-5450DN with a toner cartridge for 8,000 (!) Can assemble pages makes despite the high price for moderate cost and saves stocking, ordering processes and resources simply for the production. Therefore, this printer has received also missed a blue angel.
Really happy I was when I read the small window for measuring the toner filling level saw on the toner cartridge (HL-2250DN the the no longer has). Brother-experienced consumers know (or can read) that you simply taping this window with electrical tape or can be sealed with a chewed paper ball and thus the printer toner actually consumes to the bitter end, which then allows more than twice the number of pages. I can say a dozen Brother toner cartridges with viewing windows in good conscience by now.

Whether I still expand the memory, as I have done it at the HL-5140 and HL-3040, do not know yet because the printer with 64MB is already very well equipped. So, now nearly 3,000 pages are printed!
After 1,636 pages has been reported, "Toner Low" in 2,009 pages "toner empty" came. To this end, I must say that I do not by the printer manufacturers underlying 2.8% owned printing density (so-called. Dr. Grauert letter, DIN ISO / IEC 10561) have at my documents but often many more, including full format graphics with a coverage of more than 50%.

Now at 2,898 pages, I noticed a significant reduction in print quality for each page, so I have the same time ordered the Brother TN-3380 toner cartridge black high capacity 8,000 pages, so I can change the toner at the first sign of gaps in the printout.
But until now he still prints full surface and absolutely clean and precise, but just one sees from on individual pages and a gray haze, sometimes as strips, sometimes over the entire surface.

Ok, this has no longer been a long time. After a total of 3,029 pages, the print quality was unacceptable. The letters were only printed gray and from the edges of the pages filled increasingly with spots and stripes. So now quickly reingesetzt the TN-3380 toner cartridge, sample print ... blindingly white paper with crisp font! Now let's see how many pages the 8,000-page toner cartridge really creates ...
