Ooh Yea - the Betty Davis Songbook (CD)

Customer Review

Javoue not have been aware of the existence of this young Australian singer before this disc. No more than to have never heard the singer to whom she pays tribute here, Betty Davis, ephemeral singer 70s and as ephemeral wife of the great Miles. Nor finally knowledge of the oeuvre of Mahalia father, Jimmy, apparently famous Australian singer who is invited here on a few tracks.
Not particularly a fan of soul and funk this is the name of Joe Bonamassa, proxile guitarist japprécie particularly invited on this disc (or even affinity label requires ..? ...) That caught my ear.
Well I have not regretted the trip! This disc is superb! The voice of Mahalia Barnes first, velvety dAretha, ferocity and sensuality of Tina Bethbref a beautiful female voice. Singing this register soul / funk is not as obvious because eventually some melodious performance is to raise the sauce on repetitive gimmicks up sometimes hysterical final explosion. Here we are closer to that of James Brown funk disco Nile Rodgers course. The group is fantastic groove (The soul mates) and check-(Linfatigable kevin Shirley!) Brings into focus the effects of vintage instruments, with of course the big bass oblige- genre forward. It was a well-viscous funk, very hot (as lyrics), who really takes guts. As for Joe, the cream of his Les Paul beautifully contrasts with the roughness of the Strat young excellent guitarist of the group. The guitar is the honor with effects reverbs, echo, phasing of tremolos and other vibes, with lorgue hammond, piano Clavinet, but not "on instrumentation" with horns. Not too many solos and it's not worse either. The ramp-up, the choirs are great and no pieces nest to throw.
A beautiful découverte..play it loud..où you are!
