Petrassi lived almost centennial (1904-2003) and the Italian musical landscape marked by the quality of his compositions. The four pieces offered here cover twenty years, ranging from 1932 to 1951 Partita for Noche oscura. They give us an excellent overview of the quality of the compositions that combine all here, except for the Partita for orchestra, choir, orchestra and soloists same for the Four Sacred Hymns compounds when Italy entered the war.
What strikes listening is the skill with which Petrassi manages to subtly blend classical tradition, dodecaphony, serial music while displaying an immediately recognizable personal style. Everything is listened with evident pleasure as the music imposes itself, who do not need fireworks to remind our attention. I was particularly struck by Coro di Morti extraordinary composition for three pianos, brass, basses, percussion and male choir that takes guts.
Gianandrea Noseda confirms that he is a great leader at the head of Coro Teatro Regio Torino. The sound recording is perfect as always with Chandon. A very nice discovery.
