The cantatas of Wilhelm Friedemann Bach are too little known: they are an independent, original continuation of his father's cantatas and both musically and theologically highly fascinating. Many of them were only published by the return of the archives of the Berlin Singakademie again accessible in recent years for the first time on record. These two CDs contain cantatas, which are known for some time, and in fact, the shots are already over 20 years old - which is silent on the envelope. There are only four cantatas, so that each CD contains not even an hour of music; So the whole thing would fit on a record. Choir and soloists are maybe not top notch, but it's nice that this rarely performed pieces again are available inexpensively. One can find not only enthralling music, but also interesting thoughts that Bach has put into notes. An example: In the opening chorus "Let us cast off the works of darkness" he spells out the word "darkness" with a very bright B major triad: the sinister works of this world can thus be clothed in seemingly bright robes. People who buy the CD and listen attentively, will find more such brainstorms.
