With Jose 'Bros is the problem. He has a very thin voice.
In the duets with Gruberova he is barely audible. His timbre is boring and you can hear in his arias nothing of great tragedy. Because of a lack of dramatic representation power and boring-writing I would say he is completely miscast in the role of Edgardo.
The rest of the cast is well packed to Georg Tichy.
Tichy has the same problems as Jose`Bros, although I would say that more deficits are still recognizable in Tichy's voice. He sounds hoarse and constantly crying more than he sings. I never wonder why such a wonderful singer as the Gruberova worthy partners are placed on the page.
Chorus and orchestra are gut.Friedrich Haider accompanied his actors sensitively and with feeling. He is not a Marcello Viotti or Tullio Serafin, but what is not, can still become.
I think of buying this CD is worth it despite the few mediocre performer. One should bite the bullet and get the recording, because if only because Edita Gruberova is worth buying this complete recording. Fans of Edita can do without in no case this complete opera recording, because this is almost certainly the last complete recording of Lucia di Lammermoor with Gruberova in the title role.
It is a great pity that Gruberova never has the opportunity to sing with equal partners.
