But before I go into the album itself :, a few words about the effect of the "new drummer campaign" to me: The workhorse of DT is gone and a new drummer will be presented! Unfortunately, the "The Spirit Carries on- talent show" for me a partly quite bad aftertaste ...
Here disembarking from Portnoy was profitably exploited and celebrated with a 3-part audition. Undoubtedly, an interesting thing, but something tasteless in my opinion.
Portnoy's exit was (obviously for him) not exactly covered and somewhat selfish his bandmates over, but still a step with significant consequences for DT.
So Medeienwirksam and shameful to put this melancholy exit the scene (eg the introduction to "The Spirit Carries On" with orchestral though under painted comments of MP) I think is wrong ... Portnoy was for many years a part of the great history of Dream Theater, this exploit with a casting à la DSDS, pushes me ziemich foul on!
But that's a matter of taste ... As for the new drummer, the guys have not done anything wrong! Manginis example adapts surprisingly well to DT! But I am honest and have to say that it comes across when not playing nearly as passionate as Portnoy. His spasmodic and sweaty "Head-Banging" looks not only silly, it spreads even a certain "Hottentot Death Metal Atmoshphäre". The coolness and the joy of playing is completely missing!
Technically Mangini top notch ... and the new album is definitely a blast! But I'll probably keep buying the albums, concerts will no longer be the same ....
