Jonathan and Suzie can stop the flow of time.

This volume is the first in a series of other independent. It contains episodes 1-5 originally appeared in 2013/2014, written by Matt Fraction, drawn and inked by Chip Zdarsky, set colors by Becka Kinzie, Christopher Sebella and Zdarsky.

The first episode helps to know Suzanne, a young woman between 25 and 30 years. The different sequences the show at different ages, at important moments in his life, in which it also appears as an adult who comments on what his younger self, offering reflections made tasty by the fact that knows the consequences of those moments. Suzie has experienced her first sexual orgasm while she was taking a bath. It took several years for them to understand that stopping the flow of time for a certain period is a phenomenon which is not normal and that does not happen to others.

In the second episode, she meets Jonathan, a young man of his age, which triggers the same phenomenon at the time of orgasm. After the enjoyment, everything is frozen in time around, but he can still move and act normally.

Suzanne works for a library that will have to close for economic reasons. Jonathan asked him to use their extraordinary ability to steal money to save the back of the library.

This volume begins with Suzanne and Jonathan making love in public toilets from an undisclosed location. Once this first sequence, the authors show that they mean business with their title: it will really matter sex, in deed as in word. They adopt a relatively explicit narration from a visual point of view. It's more of that soft eroticism and pornography. There is no doubt about what the characters, but there are no close-up penetration, very few sexual organ design (less than half a dozen and more men as a woman), one or two female breasts to the air, and a little more ass. So there is not really enough to get an eyeful, it's not a comic that one reads with one hand. The female body is therefore rarely reduced to a mere object of desire, and less often than men.

Yet sexuality is indeed discussed and graphically. Fraction evokes the discovery of sexual pleasure by Suzanne in the bath, Zdarsky shows running hot water in a warm light and connects the fluid flow. One of the first times Jonathan ejaculates, he contemplates his sperm frozen droplets in the air (the time having stopped). On several occasions, the story brings the characters to wander in a sex shop (the name certainly condemned by propriety criteria of this site), the drawings showing in detail all types of items (in this kind of vibrator product, through the handcuffs).

From a visual point, this volume is a real treat, very pleasing to the eye. Chip Zdarsky realizes boards having an average of 8 boxes per page, which is a fairly high number for comics. He draws realistically, with many details, and the presence of backgrounds in over 3 boxes of 4. He makes himself the colors with the help of assistants that define him every area enjoying a color particular. He adapts his palette to each object, without trying to give a dominant color in sequence. He regularly uses bright and cheerful colors, without transforming its planks pages for small children. In two pages at the end of volume, he says the coloring process, starting with solid fills and then adding special effects, especially during times of suspensions.

From scene to scene, the reader discovers the full extent of the talent of Zdarsky. If he takes care to thoroughly describe the environment of each scene, it does not overload his boxes. It also introduces a mild form of exaggeration in facial expressions, or simplification (such as a simple line pursed lips to figure 2). Therefore, his characters are very expressive, without becoming caricatures, adding them a degree of vitality, making them more pleasant. The reader thus plunged into a tale of a visually rich, completely at the service of the narrative, never just to impress the peepers.

Matt Fraction begins his narrative with a perilous situation for the two main characters, to be sure to hook the reader with the promise of a little action. The first 3 episodes are mainly devoted to the personal story of Suzie and that of Jonathan and the beginnings of their relationship. Matt Fraction recounts with candor and a form of candor without shame or silliness, their discovery of sexuality (their first time alone) and their discovery of their unique ability (which is not obvious to ask someone so time stops for him immediately after use). The narrative device of making comment on their memory respectively Suzie and Jonathan, introduced an adult and benevolent gaze on those events.

Besides the tension born of the knowledge of this dangerous situation that awaits the two main characters in the future, the Fraction narrative goes beyond the framework of a sitcom. For starters drawings Zdarsky creates a rich and attractive reality equivalent to a sitcom unlimited budget (almost an oxymoron). Furthermore Fraction uses a light tone, integrates different forms of humor (verbal teasing, in an intimate relationship with the paltry flavor because of the background, namely a CD Esteban), handles with dexterity provocations (unforgettable furetages in sex shop), and adds a touch of culture. Suzie tells a joke on Thomas Pynchon (eg Vice caché). Jonathan quotes the text of Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. Finally, he handles skillfully elaborate forms of style. For example, when Suzie sings "Fat bottomed girls" Queen (From the Jazz Album), there are post-it on phylacteries. Above, Fraction explains that they have not obtained the right to use the words (it reminds narrative experiments of the same kind he had made in Volume 2 of Casanova Gula).

During the last 2 episodes, Jonathan and Suzie implement their project burglary, which puts them face some Kegel, the action takes its course without the story loses in humor. Time spent getting to know Jonathan and Suzie induces a total empathy for them and for the success of their project.

The title of this volume is entirely correct. Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky present the reader a couple with a busy sex life and preparing to commit a crime. Furthermore they have the ability to both achieve something weird (weird trick). Zdarsky makes drawings with cute and attractive appearance, without sacrificing detail or the expressiveness of the characters. Fraction takes the reader on a comedy dealing with sexual life frank and uninhibited without unhealthy voyeurism or complacent.
