When in June 1975 together took the flugelhorn player Kenny Wheeler with Keith Jarrett (piano), Dave Holland (bass) and Jack DeJohnette (drums), the atmosphere was electric. Due to the excellent recording quality that mood comes unadulterated to the living room. The listener can expect the usual crystal clear ECM sound.
On top of the magnificent interplay of the four players. Wheeler takes over long distances, the lead vocal, without to drown his teammates. The sound of the flugelhorn as always exhilarating and invites you to dream and think. Listen to this alone the vastness of which Wheeler in his "Gnu Suite" evokes. With Jarrett, Holland and DeJohnette he has adequate partner on your side that the compositions - enter the last wort, fill them with life and make it a memorable event - all composed by Wheeler.
The three pieces themselves admit the individual actors enough space in order to put their skills, particularly in the epochal "Heyoke". This track starts worn and eventually developed out of themselves to a rousing soundscape. Especially just before the end of the piece are for bassist and drummer repeatedly cadences available. The much shorter "Smatter" is concentrated and captivates immediately, for that reason alone, because it is more docile than the other two pieces. The legendary "Gnu Suite" concludes the only 40-minute, yet fulfilling CD.
Conclusion: The perfect opportunity to add itself this unforgettable album! A recording from which one can not get rid so easily again.
