I think the whole Gehate and Geflame is due to the fact that Geoff Tate the metal community has always been somewhat suspicious (and that not only because of the departure of de Garmo) and now is just payday.
For Frequency Unknown It must be noted that the choice of the album title rather it is the fact that Geoff Tate has one to the Waffle than anything else at first time. Although the cover spread an unintentional comedy that recalls SPINAL TAPS Smell The Glove that does not make it better. Too Bad.
For a critique of the production, I can only say that I know only the iTunes download of the album. As I listen to music in the first place in the car, I have learned that the download versions sound often bulkier than the corresponding purchase CD. Based on the iTunes version I can not understand the criticism of the production anyway. From cheap or dull because I can not see anything; for me it wummert fed out of the speakers.
The music is sublime for me of all doubt. With the exception of Give it to you, no really weak songs are on the album. With accusations that it was stylistically here not to Queensryche songs I can not do anything because I do not know what should be in the range between Warning and Queensryche Promised Land song ?! The fact is that at FU are songs that would perfectly fit on Empire or Promised Land. All songs are - despite considerable hardness - no dull Metal knocker, but Progressive Pearls with a twist. If that should not be Queensryche style, it is also my right.
And yes, the album sounds somehow after a studio album. The Empire did well or Guns and Roses Demo Crazy. And? Claiming FU possessed no common thread is also Bulls *** - the songs in perfect harmony in the compilation.
Finally something about the cover versions. The are not as bad as you are drawn here. From Jet City Woman and Silent Lucidity I was not convinced too Empire times. The versions of Empire and I Do not Believe in Love at first sound a bit unusual, but grow with each pass.
Conclusion: If you actually care less who's Rockfield or Tate, and who may be called at the end of Queensryche and your powerful progressive rock with a still horny voice is good, give FU a chance.
Supplement: Will no longer simply from the player. The only weaker songs are Slave and The Weight of The World. The new versions of the OM and Empire classic blend in perfectly. Full marks.
