Finally a Deftones album! Long you had to wait a fan of this band. The last (Saturday Night Wrist) finally came out 4 years ago. Of course, the long wait had his reasons. Actually, it was pretty bad around the band. For 2009, an album already was planned and even recorded as good as done. The album "Eros" should be (musically speaking) a very hard blow. But the hard blow then met the band and the entire fan base, as the end of 2008 Chi Cheng, a car accident happened. Even today, the bassist is in a coma and it is not yet clear when he will wake up. For the band it was, as I said, a huge blow. In the short term the whole album Eros was "temporarily" abandoned. They will publish it even sometime, but not now and probably not even in abzusehender time. They may wait until Chi wakes up. A band resolution came naturally never in question. Instead, launched a campaign for Chi and took as a substitute Sergio Vega on the four-string. And we immediately began working on a new album that should be released instead of Eros. The result can be admired at last. Diamond Eyes is the good work that connects seamlessly with all previous albums. The album called "Back to Basics" to describe I think, therefore, an exaggeration, because the band really was her style always faithful, but still every album was a very unique touch so that each album is in itself something special. So also Diamond Eyes. The typical basic ingredients are present. Chinos disturbing lyrics consisting of impenetrable metaphors whose ultimate meaning probably only he knows. As always, he understands the texts with impressive soulful vocals carry forward. Only the very reminiscent to the highlight-album of the band (White Pony), where he best could manage it by then. At the same time, however, many screaming fits are listening to, which in turn recall the time during Around the Fur and Adrenaline. It is positive to note that Chino has not forgotten anything in hard Screaming and after more than 15 years after the debut. Stephen Carpenter makes (using Chino second guitar of course) for the usual oppressive guitar work. Above all, the sound of the guitar has become wrecking balls fat again. Sergio Vega talks to his bass more in the background, he is hot is based largely on his bandmates, but does a good job.
What is noticeable in Diamond Eyes, the songs, especially when one is practiced Deftoneshörer, very quickly go into the ear. From other albums of the band one is more used they ignite very late (partly months after the initial hearing). The band finally makes what they know and love, but without getting bored with too much usual. Unfortunately that makes this album for standalone piece is very difficult to describe the devil, as the saying goes, is in the details. And all the details I can not decipher for just over a week. Overall, the panel gives a very gloomy impression. Probably due to the loss of Chi. Nevertheless, one has the feeling that this record was more taken up with positive energy. Obviously, the big blow, the band has inspired lie down properly to the wheel. You can hear that and it knows how to please. Picking out individual songs and give out tips not succeed in this plate and is generally at Deftonesplatten difficult because the whole album acts as a collective work and particularly stand out no songs, but do not fall off. However, this is an indication of the good work that has been done here the band.
Very long waited for a worthy successor of the White Pony fans. Whether Diamond Eyes is one that is, even if the songs pretty quickly ignite, probably take months (or years) can say. Until then, this album is a work that makes a lot of fun. Thanks to the band for it.
