Canto Ostinato by Simeon ten Holt is one of the best examples of that new music need not be a purely abstract and completely spiritualized juxtaposition of dissonances. From the first bar of the first movement of the two pianos are drawn into the music, and at the moment nothing has meaning except the sounds which come from the belly of these two instruments. In the booklet is that while listening to music at a ritual and after 75 minutes you know what it means. The music is not forced into rigid boundaries, because the performers decide decisively the process and the dynamics of the music. This is every performance into a singular sound event, which will not be repeated in the same form. The performers on this recording (Wieringa and De Haas) have created something very special. You can hear the care and commitment to the music, so you do not get the impression listening to two standing for themselves musicians, but a homogenous whole. For those who can do with Kevin Volans, Philip Glass, Steve Reich and other minimalists something is there to make a new discovery, the front of such big names do not need to hide. Simply amazingly good music.
