The theme of the quest itself is dear to Hermann Hesse (see also "the game of glass beads"). We follow in this book the life of a young man in a monastery and outside the monastery, still leading with his love for a monk. It will be in art, but always, always it will doubt it. A beautiful hymn to freedom of the body, without the freedom of the mind is nothing.
