The game of glass beads is the great masterpiece of Hesse and probably one of the most important books of the twentieth century. The book discusses all the way fictionalized problematic of existence and the relationship between life and knowledge. It is also an attempt to reconcialiation between intellectual and spiritual life by showing that these two aspects can not be reunited
by a third: the action and commitment in life.
