Mass Effect 2 (uncut) (computer game)

Customer Review

Already the title makes it clear that Mass Effect 2 is a disappointment for me, but show me a look at the review summary, that a minority is more - so be it.

Only a few months after I the magnificent Dragon Age: Origins have played, I torture myself by the current concoction of Bioware. Of course, alone, the fact that I still play the game and get that Mass Effect 2 is not a bad game, but it is far from what I expected from an RPG or a Bioware-action role-playing game also play to the end would have. I want the good things not go into (that has already been done in detail here), but the issues list that have the game for me the disappointment can be and can be reduced to a simple denominator: made for Konsoleros.

The Story:
Quite evil aliens instruct evil aliens with the abduction of residents of human colonies and no one cares, except an obscure organization that has revived the hero of the game consuming and making sure cooks their own thing. That's not spectacular but rock solid. After 20 hours of play but it has still been no surprises in this context and also the main character and her colleagues remain strangely colorless, especially because of the fact that their backgrounds somehow taste like filler and not to correct CVs - here me Dragon Age has worlds better fallen. There is a huge amount of calls or people that are completely useless and does not help to go deeper into the world. A big part of that is certainly what I believe versiebte dialogue system and the mission design itself.

Mission Design:
Those familiar from Bioware since Baldur's Gate games, here has the most demanding requirements. And is disappointed than ever before: land on the planet, find someone and respond to shoot through hordes of enemies, go back to the client, and again back ship, there abklappern always everybody and then off to the next planet. In principle, there is this and that can not also be concealing that the NPCs different races belong or we sometimes through the forest and even walk through a space station. By the way, there is the truly unspeakable "scan planet" for commodities or hidden side missions (Landen, Shooting, back to the ship), in which grenzdebil his mouse moves over the pad, and hopes that rapid bleeping indicating the discovery of resources.

Level Design:
Ultra-linear, artificial, sterile. Apparently to overwhelm console gamers neither technically nor in content, one moves and his team on narrow paths through neighborhoods and areas where less than lying around in a clean room at Intel. This really complete sterility of all settings is a gigantic atmosphere killer along with an unlike Dragon Age anytime noticeable freedom limitation. To make matters a frequent "illogical" to level design as it is known by shooters from the 90s, where no reason to stand around hordes of opponents in small rooms with no apparent purpose and just waiting for someone to come to the shooting. Thus even the most uninterested players miss a thing, also things that are useful for the players (ammunition, computer terminals, doors (!), Responsive people), to activate the highlighting. So can I just stand there at the entrance of a room, I once going in circles and knows everything about the area, what I need to know. A death blow to the last remnants of the discoverer urge.

Dialog System:
The dialogue system is revealed as a further nail in the coffin on real RPG-feeling despite the excellent setting with very good speakers. In principle, I click me simply through all possible answers, only not the order plays a minor role, but also also completed themes continue to remain. So I like a conversation sequence very well, I can click again and enjoy ... In order not to overwhelm the player also in the decisions that affect his mind it simple, the answers are highlighted in color - hence I can so easily always choose the blue responses and does not have to "cumbersome" think about what my character would say, if it is rather the righteous type me. Adieu, role identification.

Combat system:
Here you realize finally that you hold a title in hand, which is tailored to the needs of console players. As usual there Controller can never take with regard to the control with the classic mouse-keyboard combination, you have the annoying cover system (which occurs in more and more games) perfected with which one only seeks a always easy to find, crates, once pressed to take cover and from then on only needs the mouse to aim. In principle, this is no more than a slightly improved grouse. The lack of action is thereby still flanked by also lack of tactical depth - indeed the various weapons and a few talents provide some variety, but are also not here to some extent similar to Dragon Age, which was groundbreaking in my opinion there. And it is unfortunately not with Half-Life 2 ...

Character Development:
While the optical creation of the main character with its many possibilities is really fun (my wife was surprised that "I" mitspiele in a computer game), the rest is manageable. Some talents can fill up with a simple scoring system, thats it. Most fun it is there to buy some nice fish for the aquarium of his quarters ...

Conclusion:
Mass Effect 2 is certainly a good game, but unfortunately not at all what I expected. Story and missions, characters and the world are indeed staged film-like, but this shallow and no real potential for identification. For a good action game with a lot of action is the shooter part - at least for players who have already played several years at the PC - much too boring. I have now even runtergeregelt difficulty again and not because the game was too heavy, but because the struggles make so little fun, that I wanted to bring it as quickly as possible behind me.
Overall, the game breathes optimizing on console audience from every pore, and yet this is understandable from the economic constraints of the publishers out there makes every game at the end of a pure casual game. So who is to atmospherically dense role playing, is far better served by Dragon Age safe. And who wants to shoot into space, should take a look at the ingenious Dead Space.
