These kinds of information about Pierre Henry the attention of the distinguished band "Spooky Tooth" was apparently unaware. "Spooky Tooth" had a few months earlier recorded their best and most successful album to date "Spooky Two", which combined the best elements of ELP and Uriah Heep in a strongly keyboard-heavy sound between Heavy, Choral and melancholy.
But who acquired with this "Two" expectancy "Ceremony", experienced a nasty surprise and was sustained confused by the oblique sounds to exclusively Christian border issues. The band had apparently not reingehört in "Apocalypse de Jean". A mammoth work, where Henry was reading many hours Vinyl the last chapter of the Bible with inedible hyper-experimental synthesizer sounds in French, even Stockhausen, however, sounds like hit parade. And Henry knew this (rarely read) New Testament side issue of John also very accurate, in contrast to Spooky Tooth, which previously appeared to something accessible like "My Sweet Lord" (Jesus-rock was in) imagined.
Apparently the classical, jazz and modern avant-garde is quite a bit more adventurous and bolder than themselves progressive bands of rock like Spooky Tooth. And Pierre Henry had the courage to deliver in order of radio stations, churches or television very uncommercial things that ran not sell itself as LPs. He wanted to push through only his current ideas, commerciality apparently it did not matter.
But not the rock music whose record labels are oriented even if Frank Zappa or Pink Floyd to merchantability, claim back - claim her.
With "Ceremony" destroyed "Spooky Tooth" to another career, because the plate was recorded almost everywhere negative. It was only superficial cult in drug circles, where it was considered a Hells trip.
France was particularly tense in church circles on the outcome of "Ceremony". Pierre Henry often reversed in spiritual circles. There was in the Catholic Church of the sixties quite a receptiveness to new music and new art:
But as Pope Paul VI. "Ceremony" sounded, he was horrified. Also religious orders of monks and nuns, which Pierre Henry read each get a copy. The whole plate through there a frightening atmosphere that I had ever been through once in its entirety.
Especially frightening to hear "Jubilation" on. Although both Pierre Henry like Spooky Tooth were actually disposed anyone evil and the texts strict Catholic prayers like the "Our Father" recited etc.. The different elements of the avant-garde electronics from Pierre Henry and the organ-heavy music of Spooky Tooth did not fit together somehow, and Pierre Henry was all of the result with the repulsive Nail cover other than done. Even if "Ceremony" lonely alllein a (non-eighth tetes) very beautiful jewel with "Prayer" showed that should be integrated in the "Best Of" by Spooky Tooth. The rest is simply unpalatable with electronic screams, whimpers and hammer nails sounds of the Crucifixion. Today, the board should have the interest of the Gothic-wave which has not yet delivered nearly such a courageous work of my knowledge ...
But three star yet (rare in rock circles) because of the beautiful long song "Prayer" and the courage to tackle a Christian theme experimentally. Spooky Tooth and Pierre Henry were unfortunately two elements that are good on their own, but did not match. Note: Those who want a total shock experience, let him hear mal rein in "Apocalypse de Jean" by Pierre Henry, on the other hand sounds even "Ceremony" still accessible.
Who the religious theme generally appeals: Far more accessible is "Mass in F-Minor" by the Electric Prunes, a Christian Psychedelic Classics, which was also used in "Easy Rider" soundtrack.
