The new look is really getting used to, but you can also after some (sometimes endless) Sucherei adapt to his needs. Individual settings are adopted, moreover, 90% of the old versions. The rest (especially old macros) you have to "make improvements", which run without difficulty just at the macro, by new installation, this also in the 2010. Here I was very pleasantly surprised as I had created a lot of VBA macros themselves and this very deep into the system engaging tools can run perfectly and without compromise remains.
Office documents can incidentally also generally be opened and saved still in the "old" format and there is even for those who wants to be sure, a compatibility mode, where newer formats are grayed out, so that you "only" has the old formatting options and only can not come into the embarrassment to use things that then can not be displayed in the old format. There is now also such. As Word PDF (write) and ODT (read and write) support.
Otherwise, much is different now but in my opinion not necessarily a bad thing, even if the initial search for the usual button pretty annoying. If you look at but once accustomed to working with the new versions even goes a little faster.
In short: Better than expected but not perfect.

Update: 10.11.2010
-------------------------------------------------- ----------------------
The initially positive impression so slowly reversed, because especially Word 2010 is a real disaster. Custom add-ins from earlier versions of Microsoft do not run, own and third-party already. Leaving the compatibility mode and saves its documents in the new formats comes the next surprise. In draft mode, all images are gone. Even those that are embedded in the text flow. This is the new type of embedding. Remedy offers return Convert to the old format or inserting images as objects, but this is only an insufficient Workarount.
Word 2010 and XP can be installed simultaneously. You have to register only in the registry this:
(Only for experienced users)
-------------------------------------------------- ----------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Office \ 10.0 \ Word \ Options]
"PROGRAMDIR" = "C: \\ Program Files \\ Microsoft Office \\ \\ Office10"
"NoReReg" = dword: 00000001
-------------------------------------------------- ----------------------
It does not matter you will, re-registered each time you call change from Word XP to 2010, and back the application in the registry, which takes and annoying.
Meanwhile, I spent several hours with the software. Most of the time with the search of familiar features and research on the Internet and shaking his head, how to carry out a so extreme concept break. My users would have stoned me for something I suppose. Unimportant features have huge buttons in the Ribbon strip, while important functions have disappeared, at best, in elusive trap doors, from which one can revive them manually (email features in Outlook 2010 z. B.). In the worst case they were simply rationalized away. Mainly determines the look and is quite colorful. I also like an attractive appearance, but beneath the usability and functionality must not suffer.
More updates to follow, because as I see alone in the Internet forums, but that there is hardly any responses to this masterpiece many questions.
PS: Another star deduction there from me. Hopefully that remain at the end left ...

Update: 25/11/2010
-------------------------------------------------- ----------------------
Important Supplement for Outlook 2010: Who has migrated from an old version of Outlook to Outlook 2010, little joy will have to incoming mails that are in UTF8 text format. Here missing umlauts. This problem, however, is remedied by creating a new .pst file in the current 2010 format and the old extinguished after manual shifting of mail, contacts, tasks and calendar data. Unfortunately, after that also need to be adapted to all the rules. You are rewarded now but through an error-free display of incoming messages.

Update: 16/06/2012
-------------------------------------------------- ----------------------
Even after nearly 2 years, I am still on the Ribbon Band important functions. In my view, this system is the altered menu display clearly more rigid, inflexible and difficult user-specific customizable because you can not specify different factors such as the display size (large icon, small icon with text and only small icon) a command / a menu item. The permanent depending on the situation changing menu icons are a great hindrance for smooth working. I hope that the next version of this form goes away again.
