"Our hostile neighbors" is an ingenious comedy about arms fond average American, a little stupid presidents, where everything is right to remain in office, a greedy arms manufacturers, which makes for profit even with the enemy shops, and a new, dreaded, but actually harmless "enemy" to the north. Next year is an election year and the American President, who has instigated a war unlike its predecessors, is threatening a massive election defeat. Social ills, mass unemployment, pollution stoking the resentment of the people. So what now? Hmm you have to distract people with something, but what? A cold war against a formidable enemy seems to be the solution. Lack of potential threats is Canada chosen as new nemesis and Medienmaschienerie takes to clear the average American over the new enemy in the north on: "Thousands of Canadians crossing the US-Canadian daily unrecognized border." Everything is going perfectly crossed the Canadian border to Sheriff Bud Boomer (John Candy). A wild odyssey begins. Wait a moment. A President who instigates a war because of domestic political incapacity? This all sounds somehow terribly familiar. But this film is from 1995 and not of 2003. Micheal Moore wicked political satire is for everyone, the "Bowling for Columbine" and "Stupid White Men" have fallen, a must. Just have to be careful that a laughter does not get stuck in the throat. Since due to the parallels to current world political events this fictional comedy still a lot has to get cynical bite.
