The second new that deserves attention is the "Story of a Farm Girl", describing the hidden life of a servant and sentimental in the Normandy campaign. Again it comes to infidelity, lying, even domestic violence. Here we find the contempt Maupassant thinly disguised for the common people "the rabble", "peat" or "plebeian" as he writes. Balzac was studying the social differences between aristocracy and bourgeoisie, while Maupassant, he analyzes the contrast between provincial petty bourgeoisie and the people.
Finally, the new collection of the most fun is probably "Family" which depicts bourgeois hypocrisy in a Parisian family. The mother has just died and immediately stepdaughter think of nothing but the will and inheritance. But things do not always go as planned ...
The other stories are not without interest either as "Spring", where the beginning of a passionate love of a man is restrained by another. Moral: women in love are "shopping" and men are "naive". Therefore mistrust.
In the end we find the theme of female homosexuality in "The wife of Paul", a concept emerged in the late nineteenth century. Maupassant describes the exasperation of the public response to this new phenomenon and shame for a man to be deceived by his wife ... with another woman.
