The perfomance is perfect and comes to the values the Synology on the website indicates. Data transfer with large files running under Windows (SAMBA) and Linux (NFS) with 100 MB / s. Smaller files will be transferred even with about 40-60 MB / s. The perfomance in file encryption so far I could not test.
The power consumption is quite good. When operating with 4 hard drives, the system consumes about 38 watts when accessing. For hard disks hibernation can be set, done a long time can not access the NAS turn the hard disks off and power consumption drops to about 14 watts. The values were measured with a Brennenstuhl Energy Meter PM 231 E.
Unfortunately hibernation did not work reliably in my first unit. Using the highly competent support an error in the fan control could be identified, which took the hard drives regularly from sleep mode. I have replaced the unit with a new one, and since the hibernation works very reliable.
The volume is very good in operation and at rest. At rest, the hard drives, the fan runs quietly on. I have the device are directly on the desk, the fan noise can be heard, but do not interfere. The hard disk access is barely perceptible, however.
The build quality is quite good, although the housing is made of plastic, but still leaves a quality impression. The hard drives can be easily installed or replaced without tools.
I would recommend this NAS anytime.

Update:
Even my replacement unit now has problems with the hard disk standby. As with the first unit, it is, according to Synology Support to the fans and their control. From the support I have received a software patch via email, by now everything seems to work. A few other owners in various forums have the same problem, so it seems to be an isolated case. Who can live without the standby, for it does not matter.
Nevertheless, I would Recommend the device, however, by pointing out that the fan controller may not be error-free, thereby possibly the Hard Disk Standby not working. Support I will confess at this point again, which helps very competently and quickly!
Hope the next DSM update (version 5), the better. Unfortunately a star deduction :(
