For a few months I can finally take pictures with this standard lens. This zoom range I use most often, so that the bayonet Nikkor has his place. No question, when it comes to distortion longer fixed focal lengths are better. Sharper they are. However, the differences are on such a high level that the 24-70 does not need to hide. There are, however, from aperture 11 a slight blur (again at the pixel level - 100% view), which is probably due to diffraction. Between 4 and 8 aperture, this lens is in my opinion the strongest and also supplies the 36MP sensor with sufficient material. And as far as you can many prophecies of doom believe that creating really only special prime lenses ... at the edges slightly blurred (the effect increases with decreasing focal length) it is true; but it has its limits. Finally, there is a zoom lens and therefore a compromise - image quality / flexibility. I can compare the lens is not really, because I have not tried the competition. I have, however, with the combination of D300 - worked Nikkor 17-55 and am of the opinion that the results meet in the 100% magnification on an equal footing. The focus drive is very fast, practically inaudible to the attacks and may at any time be overridden manually (A / M). The Nano Crystal Coat may reduce ghosting and reflections, it can conjure up terrible. For point sources, there are slight reflections and flares. Zoom and focus can be soft and turn the rubber seated. The weight is in my opinion completely ok; it's just a rock-solid lens and is primarily found on larger cameras. At a D5100 would probably act a bit strong; but the current full Forma Tern it cuts a fine figure. When it comes to haptics are already worlds between Nikon and other F-bayonet providers. The Nikkor makes an indestructible impression, including the metal lock the lens hood helps. Currently there is still a Tamron same focal length, which is advertised with a stabilizer. I do not miss him. The other day I involuntarily "tested" him - I had overlooked that he was still active in my 80-400 and have wondered why despite mirror lock, remote control and stand no sharp image possible. Stability and it works. Conclusion: (if the stabilizer is not broke) Although the stabilizer reduces vibrations, he can obliterate them not. And so I have to work just a little more complicated for best results. Even a stabilizer-stabilized image is not so free from camera shake, it is really sharp. Conclusion: If you want a standard zoom and a good optical performance paired needs with top workmanship and stability, will find it difficult to find something better. The only downside is the price. But if this objective in the long term as acting like I know that from my other Nikkor lenses, it's worth the extra price. During one of my Sigma can remain at temperatures around the freezing point before the focus Grace, on the other fellow, the coating makes Feierabend, the Nikkor lenses have so far mastered all the living and weather conditions.
