Unfortunately, the MX518 is getting on in years. No 1000Hz polling rate, only with trickery could they raise to about 500Hz. With better tracking on various surfaces of modern laser sensors 1800s infrared sensor could no longer keep up.
With the G500 then came a Verschlimmbesserung on the market - although the 5000 dpi laser sensor which is also used in the SteelSeries Xai was beyond all doubt, but in the harsh anti-welding surface, the new extra keys, the slightly altered form, and especially the shaky 4-way scroll wheel and the front-heavy positioning of the sensor eliminated the spirits.
The G400 retains what the MX518 has a bestseller: The form has not been changed. Instead of a smooth surface with a black Holoeffekt gray material is used for the back, which is not as sandy as the G500 still as smooth as that of MX518. The infrared sensor has been trimmed to 3600dpi without software you can switch between the stages 400, 800, 1800 and 3600 dpi at (I suspect it is the same sensor as in the Razer DeathAdder 3500dpi). 1000Hz polling rate on USB enabled innately soon as you plug the G400. The cable was diluted and made lighter, which I like very much, it is similar to the Cyber Snipa Stinger and does not interfere at all. It is provided for software drivers, it is not even necessary. In the downloadable on Logitech's website Logitech Gaming Software 8.x is not a mouse driver, but a macro manager to Tastenumbelegung and for changing the Hz rate and DPI levels. Prefabricated profiles for many games are included. But why such a thing 43.3 MB is needed beyond me, A4Tech has much better software with more options which a fraction is not even that big. Nevertheless, the software for Logitech is a big improvement and who do not like them, they need not definitely. Alternatives such as X-Mouse also work perfectly.
Conclusion: Insert simple and comfortable. The mouse glides wonderfully precise on the screen. Interestingly, I use the mouse with 3600 dpi maximum, at the 5000 dpi laser sensor G500 / Xai / Speedlink Kudos were me 2000dpi almost too quickly.
I have the mouse now has five days in use and it really felt from the moment perfectly. Clearly my new favorite.
Edit: After more than 10 months use all the buttons and the scroll wheel still work perfectly. The mouse feet have almost no signs of wear, except for a slightly matt finish of the mouse buttons is also the surface even as the first day. Thumbs up, so that is.
Edit 2: August 19, 2013 over two years - mouse wheel and buttons and feet are still perfectly.
Edit 3: April 13, 2014 the black color coating on the logo could easily be abgeribbelt completely with your finger today. Now everything is silver. If you really can do the same so. The mouse still works 1a. Would soon anyway the Logitech G502 Core Proteus, SteelSeries Rival Optical and the CM Storm Alcor try. Will just once a new mouse! :)
