The purpose is simple in appearance, blindness spreads over the world without obvious cause, we first isolate those who have it in inhumane conditions, in vain, for all will be achieved, except one. Ancient reflex, they are sidelined, like lepers or plague. So, as always in this kind of scenario settle disorder and bestiality, it is the rule of the strongest. Strange world where this `white blindness' puts beings face their own blackness, forcing them to wade and survive in their filth literally and figuratively until they are reborn - maybe purified.
A style of an apparent simplicity with minimal punctuation, dialogues as is included in the narrative without punctuation or reference to the speaker paradoxically give this novel a great fluidity and speed up the pace to a peaceful end. It is quite paradoxical, because the minimum punctuation and long sentences do not leave us a breath, and yet ....
A novel that leaves no one indifferent, that can be read on several levels, which rotates and returns it long after you finish. I feel finally ready for other novels of Jose Saramago.
