From the ashes of Kyuss and the "Desert Sessions" led Josh Homme Queens of the Stone Age as a self-reinvention. On the back of the jewel cases one sees the trio as if by chance with a few beer cans stand in front of a fence; where the background hovers seemingly unnoticed a UFO. The other artwork is dominated by retro pinups, why not. Josh accompanying musicians are recruited directly from the last Kyuss- Instrumentation: Alfredo Hernandez delivers usual solid drum work, while Nick Oliveri is indeed nominal bassist, but on the album plays - Homme took over the studio bass identical with, the song anyway. The musical development is the knowledge of the two pre-projects comprehensible: The three great opener rock forward, then it is always spacey, oblique, bulkier and jamlastiger in another CD course. The tunes do not always remain traceable, the Groove is however at any time murderous, and the atmosphere lively and highly dynamic. Homme called the new style "Robot Rock" while Oliveri spoke of "Kokainpop". Personally, I can find on the CD purely nothing music in pop style, so I favor Hommes style description.
The QOTSA- debut is bound catalog unique in that the Kyuss- heritage still hears well, which have Homme & Co later virtually completely dissolved. Even such sprawling psychedelic improvisational passages like here presented Homme again only to "Them Crooked Vultures" there but with oblique references to the blues.
The new edition of the album contains three bonus tracks from the Kyuss / QOTSA and Beaver / QOTSA- split CDs. These fit well into Gesamthörerlebnis and extend the term on a good hour. A pity, I find that in the bonus tracks "Born to Hula" was left out, but you can not have everything well. My Anspieltipps are "Avon" and "bronze". Four stars.
