The Abyssinian (Paperback)

Customer Review

For the interrogative form of the title of my review, I would like to report what others have already said. Make no mistake about it, Jean-Christophe Rufin has a real talent as narrator and novelist. Everything about the Abyssinian is a tribute to the intelligence: The subject, the spirit of travel and adventure novel, style and vocabulary appropriate to the Enlightenment, the quality of geographical and historical descriptions ... The book transpires that spirit of East and the role played time, the Horn of Africa in the unconscious of the discoverers of new worlds. But because he has a will, but we can not help regretting that his narrative is uneven. The first part, very detailed and thorough gives way to a second faster, expedited almost ... like Rufin had to contend with the only requirements imposed by the publisher: Especially, less than seven hundred pages ... Feeling! Besides already felt by reading the scent of Adam. Excluding this Abyssinian would not have suffered three hundred additional pages. The novel would have deepened and the reader true jubilation.
