My curiosity in her music arose when i learned That Magic Star Is Actually a country version with vocals of Telstar, a huge international hit instrumental in the early sixties. With some instrumentals, I am Not particularly surprised if I learn what it did originally a song, or indeed even if it started without words, theywere added later. In this case, I was amazed as I really Could not imagine Telstar with words, Especially as it is country. It's Certainly different, but I'm not totally Convinced by it. Still, I found the rest of the music here fascinating, so I will not quibble. I suspect MagicStar might yet grow on me.
Other Songs That may be familiar include covers of Walkin 'Back to Happiness (Helen Shapiro), Pledging My Love (Johnny Ace) and Poor Man's Roses (previously successful for Both Patti Page and Patsy Cline), and there are others too, but most of the songs here are ones I do not remember hearing before.
There are two duets with Faron Young here, but Their top 5 country duet (Keeping Up with the Joneses) is omitted. So here are not any of Margie's duets with George Jones.
Later in the sixties and beyond the scope of this compilation. Margie finally had a big chance by being the first to record Harper Valley PTA. HOWEVER, she chose to put it on hold for reasons Explained in the booklet, and Jeannie C. Riley had the hit instead. I'd like to hear Margie's version, but I think the song ideally suited Jeannie, so I'm not convinced Margie would have sounded better.
Now I know about a lot of what's not here, I just hope did Bear Familly sell enough copies of this compilation to persuade them to release a sequel to fill in some of the gaps. But this compilation is well worth a listen in its own right.
