After quite a few lesser-known composers are back in fashion, also the question of the "correct" interpretation is like a lot and discussed. Alkane works - sometimes referred to as unplayable - are all pianists not easy, so it needs already the class of Hamelin or Pletnev to not only play the work, but also to interpret. I know three recordings: Hamelin, Lewenthal and this here by the person who Alkan made presentable again. Yes, it is correct, Smith has not quite the technical finesse of Hamelin. Still, he manages to give the work depth and elaborate melodic parts. Where Hamelin sometimes by rushing for my taste as an express train, Smith takes the time to give the sounds more content. Who is blinded by Hamelinschen speed rush, this recording may not like, but speed is not everything even when alkane. I would definitely recommend the CD, the recording quality is very good for the age of the recordings. But as a counterpoint to, I recommend listening to the recording times Hamelin.
