Product selection and decision-making:
********************************
At Dell U2713HM you pass almost not here, if you put performance and price in relation to each other. Of course, I've encountered during my research on some very negative reviews. Rickety processing, halos, uneven illumination, humming and buzzing - na thanks, I myself would rather the same for another manufacturer to. But the few alternatives are invariably expensive and convincing either on paper or in practice. Here you will find more than enough disgruntled users. There is a very negative trend of manufacturers to save more and more in detail and to submit half-baked products to market. So I let it perforce chance and ordered in December with a much bellyache U2713HM.
Delivery:
*******
The monitor is shipped in a plain cardboard box. Inside there is commendably no styrofoam, and here are all packing materials from environmentally friendly cardboard. After unpacking the U2713HM surprised by its lightness. A design award, he will not win, but the waiver of piano finish I welcome as soon as you U2711. It is precisely designed as a solid workhorse. Almost all necessary connection cables are included. Only the DisplayPort cable fell victim to the rigor, the U2711 This was standard here.
Connection:
********
In contrast to the U2711 U2713HM has less connectivity. A relevant drawback I do not see here, however, because everything important is definitely there. The card reader of the predecessor I miss however.
Initial start-up:
************
With mixed feelings, and in anticipation of terrible halos when booting, I took up the monitor. But what can I say, even though I turned on the screen at night and in almost completely dark room, the U2713HM be presented with a full black and without the infamous flashlight effect on the edges.
After the computer starts, I tested the monitor with a software tool to track uniformity issues and any pixel errors. But everything presented itself perfectly to my surprise. Only the factory calibration I could criticize. No matter what mode I tried, always had a minimal reddish / beige color cast available.
Calibration and image quality:
********************
Based on the test report from Prad I've assumed that the U2713HM does not have the possibility of separate adjustment of red, green and blue. In order for a manual hardware calibration would be impossible and that would have been the killer criterion in my copy. But to my great joy has the screen of all the settings that are required for a professional calibration. This I was doing with a i1 Display Pro from X-Rite. After a correction of the red channel to the Monitor presented with a very pleasant neutrality. The graphics signal remained almost linear, so are the ideal conditions for farbverlässliches work given.
And now I come to one of the greatest assets of U2713HM. The perfect and moderate anti-reflection! In direct comparison with the U2711 I now quite understand why so many users could not get used to the predecessor. I was the anti-reflective coating of the U2711 never bothered, but for U2713HM the predecessor as if a thick layer of dust would be located on the panel behaves. In principle, the U2713HM has an equally clear and pure screen display, as they are known by Glossybildschirmen, only without the annoying reflections. This is particularly noticeable when reading text or in image processing in homogeneous areas of color. The viewing angle stability is just as outstanding as its predecessor. Also positive is the low power consumption and the elimination of annoying warm-up time.
Errors & problems:
**************
The here from other reviewers mentioned often buzzing I could not understand with my applications with the best intentions. Only with said special link and the "Dell-PDF" I could test it, but the whistling is then so minimal that I'm not sure if it would ever ever occurred to me. My screen by the way the Rev.A00 and was made in August.
Unfortunately, the 4 USB 3.0 ports are not available to the same extent as I would have liked. My also in December newly purchased computer has innately via USB 3.0 interfaces. But apparently provides the Dell U2713HM not enough power to operate my external 2.5 inch HDD. In one of the side USB ports, the hard drives are not even recognized in other after a few minutes disconnects. I find that very annoying!
Ergonomics and operation:
*******************
On the part of ergonomics and operation are all in the green zone. The screen is tilt and turn swivel and height adjustments. Abandoning the sensor-controlled menu keys of the predecessor is bearable, especially since the latter have often proved to be bitchy and unreliable when U2711. The menu is largely that of the U2711 and is among the best I've ever met in monitors. But was translated ON AN place as its predecessor also, ON was, but that's a minimal blemishes.
Summary of the positive and negative characteristics:
*********************************
+ Illumination
+ Image quality and anti-reflective coating
+ Power consumption and settings
+ Color fidelity (after manual calibration)
+ Processing and Design
- Poor factory calibration
- Severe use capabilities of USB ports
- Elimination of the memory card reader
Conclusion:
****
Although the Dell U2713HM has some weaknesses, he convinces by its excellent image display. It is recommended for quality-conscious users as well and energy-efficient all-rounder, which is suitable in office mode as well as for graphics and image editing. However, here is a manual color calibration strongly recommended, since the factory calibration naturally not particularly convincing fails.
Due to the very streaky reviews but you have to start from a large series of scattering. Certainly very annoying. Here we can only try to "educate" the manufacturer to improvement to the customer. Because I can not imagine that a large number of returns and return runners profitable in the long run for the manufacturer me.
