The horror genre struggled in recent years with a growing credibility problem. Vampires, demons or monsters have become part of mainstream culture in times of progressive nihilistic society. The demons of the past make us no more fear, but the fear of the individual has not decreased even today: fear of disease, failure, loss of identity, alienation, heteronomy and insignificance. Ligotti knows this fear and introduces the reader to all those places, it displaces so much. In endless monologues he leads the reader astray, conveys uncertainty and creates a counter-model to a classic story.

The stories in this collection of short stories are therefore also not for people who expect moments of hope, light or joy even in the horror genre. Rather, these stories are an endless amount of darkness, despair and interstices of existence. This surprisingly little blood is shed. The horror is rather enigmatic and takes place in the minds of the actors from. In perhaps the best story in this anthology "Our Temporary Supervisor 'we see from the perspective of an ordinary worker as a change in the management structure of a company changes its self and him and his colleagues driving into the abyss. As a reader, I felt not only carried away but felt the despair of the worker in each line of the story. General convey the stories mostly the feeling of being the author delivered and despite the seemingly low number of pages of the book is in this collection more depth available than in many large thousand page novel.

At this point, two warnings are still given. As I have already indicated, there is a book largely consists of endless monologues of depressive narrators. This can sometimes seem daunting, especially since a linear plot in most stories does not exist. Who different perspectives and especially clear sections wishes will find no favors here. Furthermore Ligotti used a very extensive language with many words quite unconventional. This language is full of imagination and is an experience in itself, while these language the reading experience but also significantly affect, in particular, readers / inside, who do not speak English at a native level.

Who of them will not be deterred and is a friend of dark, unusual and profound story will however have a lot of fun to Ligotti.
