From 5 very different cultures one can be chosen. The game is turn-based. The fights run as video. The voices give an even more the feeling of being integrated. The map also created randomly let the games still do not get bored. There are many settings, from card size up difficulty.
One could almost say the game is to sink a modern variant of ships, but actually even more. We have already played the game now hundreds of times and it will always be played, even if it is not one hundred percent error-free. It happens now and again that it is in Video battles hangs (programming error: happened before when a vessel reaches the edge of the screen). By automatic storage can overlook that, just load last storage.
For fans turn-based games an absolute recommendation, still.

How do you get the game to run on Win7?
Why the game under Win7 in which a running and the other not, is ultimately from afar hardly be clarified. "Googling" is highly recommended. My Experience:
1. Operating System and Components:
The different Win7 versions appear to play a role. Under Win7 (starter version) I have exactly the same problems, as many others have already described. Installation ok, ok to start largely compatibility setting, game freezes after 30sec to 2min one. The same problem many seem to have with the Win7-home version.
I: Win7 Professional version, 64-bit, i3 processor with 4GB memory and an Intel 4000 onboard graphics.
2. Installation:
Good experience I've done so, the game is not in the default folder C: \ Program, but under "c: \ games \ botf" to install. This has the advantage that the folders are no longer than 8 characters, which was forbidden before.
After the installation should be included in the "Birth of the Federation" Start menu. Directly after the "patch" to the file name "BOTFMPG.EXE" should be installed. My file (patch) is 12,900 KB in size and from 17.09.1999. When installing the patch file, please read all notes carefully.
3. Compatibility:
Does not the game, the compatibility mode must be used often then. For this you click the "Start" menu, right-click the entry "Birth of the Federation" (or right-click on the file "TREK.EXE" in the directory where you installed it). In the window that appears, click with the left mouse button on "Properties". The now appearing window has multiple tabs, one called "compatibility". To change this compatibility mode you just put a check mark in the small square and selects the compatibility with "Windows NT". So that I might at least have had the best experience. If it does not go with it, you can try it with "Windows 2000" or another entry. The chances are that it runs with another entry, however, is rapidly declining.
TIP: Sometimes Birth of the Federation starts with a black screen then. Pressing the Windows key lets the game appear. So it is with me.
I hope therefore to be able to help many. Good luck and have fun.
