When I Canon EF 28 1: took 1.8 USM from the pack, the first impression was all around positive: The lens has a compact, comes in an attractive (for a lens of this age) design and is surprisingly wertig for the price range , It surpasses in this last point, the Canon EF 50mm 1: 1.4 USM, which is also in my possession (in addition to the '85 in the same series). I bought the 28 to complement the 50's and the 85's, so as to have a trio of strong light and at the same time more compact lenses in my camera bag. Both lenses I guess (5D Mark II, Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II Canon EOS 7D, Canon EOS) for its excellent imaging performance to the use of my cameras. Unfortunately, the lens falls far short of my expectations on both full-frame as well as the APS-C sensor. It is practically useless for architectural photography as acceptable sharpness values are achieved only in the center. Even stopped down to f 4 the appearance remains on the screen behind my Canon EF 24-105 1: 4 L IS USM (at 28mm zoom) back. The picture is from the impression of sharpness as the inclusion of a Megazoom with ultra-wide zoom factor. There is also a serious vulnerability to aberrations (esp. Chromatic aberration) and an unsightly barrel distortion, which devalue the objective sustainably. I hope that Canon in the foreseeable future a new edition of this lens presents with better optical performance. Users of modern DSLRs with quality standards (and I speak not expressly pixel fetishists) can not satisfy this lens, unfortunately. Therefore: 2 stars for the great build quality. 0 stars for no longer contemporary imaging performance.
