Denon DN-S3700 single CD / USB / MIDI player

Customer Review

With the DN-S 3700 Denon takes up the fight with the reference of the Pioneer CDJ 1000 MK3. Accordingly, I will refer to my review on the CDJ in order to highlight the differences between these two high-end players.
Once you have the DN-S 3700 assembled (turntable, Slipmat and vinyls have to be placed on one another and screwed), it can even go directly.

The player reads CDs, MP3-CDs and MP3 & WAV files from a USB stick or hard drive (or I-Pod). With the CDs he has no problems with USB sticks, it can also occur many times before, he does not recognize the drive on the first time and even several times plug does not lead to success. Thus it is in the detection of USB sticks often a gamble, but where it can also be, that recognizes the player, the device immediately after plugging.

The DN-S 3700 but has detected the device (this can be seen to it that the warning light lights up the stick), then you can play without problems its MP3 tunes and playing remains consistently without error (USB 2.0). Perhaps the recognition is improved with the next update, the rest I absolutely recommend to update the player to version 1300, what I did with the first after installation.
This update resolves the effect visualization is namely greatly improved and you get the option to set the Autolooplänge to a larger value than the specified 4 Steps.

Back to Main functions, all the keys are a good size and equipped with a pleasant pressure point. In addition to the start & Cue function, you can equate upon request with the Pioneer CDJ, especially the Quick Jump keys in everyday life are of good use. These can be eg. As in 30-second increments in the track back and forth jumping, while carrying out the fine-tuning with the jog wheel. Here you can continuously remain in Vinylemodus because the search works better or just as accurate as the CDJ Search mode.

Otherwise one can per track, CD or USB flash drive, 3 Hot Cues or Hot Loops 3, and set an AB loop. The Hot Loops must agree exactly the starting point, but the end point can be shortened or lengthened in a certain area, as well as a max. Frames are pushed together or extended from 64 beats to a 1/8 beat. In the AB loop, it is possible for the first time the start and end points, also to put in a certain framework.

These points, as well as the pitch speed with or without key ADJUST ON can then in CDs in the internal memory to store (max. 5000 Memory points) or store on the USB stick. Where it may be that these points will be lost with the creation of a new database on the USB stick. What I would be at a disadvantage of the DN-S, you always have to create a database on the USB device, otherwise you can not by artist etc. Search. Unfortunately, you have every time you have a new track pulled on the stick, create the database from scratch, because you can not find and play these new Track else, which I did not just find optimal.

Another thing which is also not optimal, is the Key Adjust mode - known as Master Tempo Pioneer - This function adjusts the pitch, so that there are no deviations from the original pitch more. With vocals, this feature is also indispensable, unfortunately it has not managed the Denon sound distortion at piano tracks, and to get the chopping of basslines down. Maintains it is necessary to every track that you want to listen to pitch only if there are parts that the Key Adjust mode does not create, or whether the typical "chopping" sound comes out. Who can not imagine it, be should even "Marc Marberg - Mega Shire" in the second break with pitched and listen without Key Adjust, then you know why you need the Key Adjust mode off at Mega Shire. And this problem also has the CDJ, thus there is no difference here.

Is a big difference there for at the waveforms, while the CDJ in CDs created the wave forms by itself without problems, the DN-S 3700 can not create waveforms automatically! What really disappointed me, the DN-S can ever show at CDs and MP3 CDs no wave forms, but only with MP3 tracks from the USB stick, but only when using the included software, the wave shapes by hand (!) Created hat.Somit there is more work that makes the CDJ by itself for one thing. Accordingly, a great point is very clear to the CDJ, which the Denon load the entire waveform immediately after the track display, which further is not surprising, however, eventually they have been previously created in the MP3 file.

The BPM indication he also reads from the file (if you have them also previously created), it is also recommended because of the BPM Counter is a decimal point very accurately, but mostly undecided though. Especially with CDs remains a not much left but the BPM to protect specified by a manual input or to fall, so they do not constantly back and herspringt. Depending on the track since it could 128-140 BPM toggle, which can be fatal, especially in the Effekteinschleifung.

Specific problems had the Counter at hardstyle, because he has often 75 BPM displayed here instead of 150 BPM, fast but night brought immediately type in the appropriate value. After all, the appropriate (input) BPM-number can also save with the Memory function.

The effects are otherwise consistently very good, and especially the filter (high, mid, low), next to the Flanger get along very well. The Echo is unfortunately down the output volume of the fade, is otherwise well.

Most fun but does still scratching, which is really great by the rotating turntable at 33 or alternatively 45 rpm and accordingly also feels better than the CDJ Pioneer, for the Denon has strangely no starting speed, ie while the CDJ can slow Turntable technically boot, goes the Denon only 0 seconds-instant start, but he can be like the Pioneer max. Phase out for 4 seconds. Reverse There is also like the CDJ, Dump is withheld for Denon.
With "dump" the signal is placed backwards on the forward signal which sounds very interesting.

Conclusion: With the DN-S 3700 Denon is a very good video player managed the particularly when scratching lives out his full potential and with the full pitch range of +/- 100% for all media (CD & MP3) is better than the competition. Unfortunately lacks some features that are in the claim - in 1000 to show the CDJ teeth - should not have been forgotten.

But to whom the Waveform display with USB Tracks sufficient (for self-preparation) and more emphasis on the USB interface and a knotless Vinylefeeling (with real 9 'Vinyleplatte) sets, which is the Denon absolutely right, if only because the player also considerably cheaper than the CDJ!
