First photos
__________
The set here at Amazon pictures are spontaneously - that is out of your hands out, emerged without a tripod and flash on our doorstep. With such a fabulously-impressive image quality, we did not expect: The colors are saturated, intense and rich in contrast. Finest, distant details are captured sharp and vivid. Is wonderful how much rest in the background! Annoying duplications and triplicates of objects inevitably draw attention to themselves, do not exist here. That was a point in the Canon EF 70-200mm 1 us: 4,0L IS USM lens has very disturbed.

Look, feel, control elements

Even unpacking was an event: The Canon EF 100-400mm 1: 4.5-5.6L IS II USM camera lens stuck well protected in a Canon-box. With its 1640 g it is certainly no lightweight, and certainly not when shooting without a tripod out of his hand. Heavy and high quality it feels. Mounted on the Canon 5D Mk II, it looks more than impressive.
First, we have made us familiar with the handling. The slider or switches 70-200mm 1 compared with the Canon EF: to feel pretty good 4,0L IS USM lens and easy to use, because they are a little further out of the surface. Whether the zoom ring is easy and a somewhat sluggish can be set, you can determine individually on the Smooth-Tight-ring.
Unlike the Canon 70-200mm seen in the photos for comparison to the Canon 500D is the black hood not shiny, but in matte black. Details such as the lens cap convincing uncomplicated handling: This can be easily removed with larger hands and put back with mounted lens hood. Outwardly, he reminds us of the lens cap from our Tamron. On closer inspection, however, shows a significant improvement compared with the low-cost competitors: Small biting edges provide a firm grip.
The hood is equipped with a red dot, so you can see at what point it has to be mounted on the lens. It is important to make sure that it is being placed. She clicks into place. If you want to remove it, a button must be pressed. So they can not solve by themselves. At one point, they can defer. Through this window, it is possible to check the respective filter or optionally adjust the polarization filter if the aperture sits on the lens.
Practically, the integrated tripod ring in the lens-barrel. The foot can be removed.

Taking pictures with Canon EF 100-400mm 1: 4.5-5.6L IS II USM Camera Lens

Selectable are two focus areas: either 98 cm to infinity, this lens called to full, or 3 m to infinity. In some shooting conditions, the latter setting shortens the time for focusing. One power at 400 mm shots in the distance and then goes from the telephone in the macro range, the autofocus reacts somewhat sluggish.
There are three modes for image stabilization. It is advisable to rely on it to compensate for the shaking of the camera-lens combination is. Particularly Mode 1 is a revelation: He damps vibrations in all directions. We had not anticipated that it would be so hard to keep the camera lens and quiet. With mode 1, it is really much easier. However, even with image stabilization, the exposure time must be shorter, or you have to use a tripod. In the heat of battle we had this lens for the first time in hand, we have from time to time forget to activate the stabilizer with the trigger. Consequence: motion blur.
In general, the sole use of autofocus when tracking of birds in bushes or in trees makes little sense. Instead of the originally targeted animal branches or leaves are captured so crisp example quickly. If the bird flies away, you have to reach quickly as possible and blind the appropriate controller for the autofocus. By increasing the switching controls is relatively straightforward.
