X. Tartakover shows us his science; there are not fifty good books about chess in general are those of grandmasters and this breviary is one. I rather would entitle the book "Breviary beginnings" as occupying a good third of the book, too much in my opinion for a book for beginners. This gives the idea that we must first study all the variants covered by the book to learn to play chess ... and the author quickly passes over the middle game and end while trainer is to first study the finals. But this is the book to which I come back all the time because it is a very rich vademecum openings for the average player, much more readable thanks to the literary and playful style X. Tartakover, the F. failures guide Van Seters for example.
