It was time that In Extremo to report again to be heard, because the last studio album is indeed now back already three years. As with the last album also they put back more on their lyrics and compositions than in earlier works. In the CD "My mad heart" was the indeed despite concerns well in this disc, I am no longer as euphoric, because was on the last album with "only her alone" a song on it which, although entraining well live, but is textually extremely weak and sat known platitudes. On "Sängerkrieg" are unfortunately represented by this variety a number of songs, such as "Seven Cooks", "New You" and "To be free", the latter two have a good tune and therefore are not so bad. "Message in a Bottle" is totally gone but for me next! Also the song "In this light" does not convince me. The other songs are however quite successful. The title song "Sängerkrieg" distributed in the best possible way and with loud rock powerful swipes against the medieval scene and towards Potsdam. Also really good are the melancholy "My longing", "On's life" and "Dance with me". Especially the latter is my favorite song on the album. Bright Lights! Now the 7 vagrants were known with verrockten medieval texts and so what may here not be missed: As would the Spanish "En esta Noche" (fast and rocking), the French "Requiem" by Francois Villon (played with acoustic instruments), the ancient Estonian "spell" (very worn) and the English "An End Has A Start", which is a cover version of the hit by the British band The Editors from last year; pretty rock and punk, unusual, but not bad.
I am in this album unfortunately ambivalent: Although several good songs are represented, but unfortunately also some not so successful, pull the plate down. In Extremo really should put more time on writing the texts, because it is precisely at the New High German rhyming we listen more closely than in Latin, Old French or Central Germany. The competition from Munich and Potsdam has demonstrated with their recent albums how to do that.
