SLR Magic Hyper Prime 50 / 0.95 lens for Sony NEX (Accessories)

Customer Review

After I have long been fascinated by the großblendigen lenses for the Sony Alpha 6000, I ordered then the SLR Magic Hyper Prime 50 / 0.95. Meanwhile, I've also made a few hundred photos with it and have formed a certain opinion. Alternatively, I still have the Zhongyi Mitakon 35mm T0.95 F0.95 and Handevision 40mm f0,85 considered, which I had already tested the Handevision at my camera. Since all mentioned lenses work anyway manually, you should pull adapted lenses from Canon and Nikon also contemplated. A certain tingle of residual risk was in order but then there because one finds very little testing on the Hyper Prime F0,95.

Entscheident for Hyper Prime was, of course, in addition to the aperture, the focal length of 50mm and that the price of 900 EUR was still in 3-digit range, as opposed as the Handevision 40mm f0,85 for currently 1800 EUR. For me it was primarily concerned with the impressive background blur, which can be reached with a large aperture. In addition, I noticed that the Handevision rim relatively strong vignetting. Not only in the I tested specimen, also photos of other testers reported this effect. Vignettes can indeed remove the image editing, but just at the most expensive on the distance between the competitors is the little forgiving.

The fact that the blur less pronounced at smaller focal length, you can see, for example, if you Sony 35mm F1.8 50mm F1.8 compares with Sony. Therefore, the Zhongyi Mitakon was more interesting because of the lower price of 640 EUR, but also not a bargain that you can buy by the way. An adapted lens with aperture F1.4 to buy in addition, was not interesting to me, because of the contrast to the Sony 50mm F1.8 even lower.

After approximately the same size as the Hyper Prime was with the first delivery in the original box of the SLR Magic a dusty Sony A-Mount Zoom, I'm scared at first. As you can read in other reviews often times, Amazon seems to derive the returns directly to the next customers. The replacement then contained the correct Hyper Prime.

The Hyper Prime is relatively small, so that it is yet to act well on the small E-mount cameras. Unlike Handevision it is one size smaller. The weight is relatively high for the size, but fits comfortably in your hand. Included is a plastic cover for the E-Mount bayonet. On the front, however, there is not the usual plastic snap closure, but a metal screw with 62mm filter thread. Although the looks classy, ekes out its existence still in the closet, because me it's too complicated. I have an immediate 62mm protective filter (so-called. UV filters) to be ordered, a 62mm lens hood made of metal, as well as a quick access panel made of plastic. The cover fits directly into the lens hood, so that UV filters and lens hood can always remain on it.

Direct the eye to look through the lens freed from the lids, is impressive. The inside diameter of the lens is almost the lens size and gives an impression of brightness. The disenchantment comes then the actual profit during the exposure time. In theory, the exposure time in relation to the aperture F1.8 reduced approximately by a factor of 3.6 (the square of 1.8 / 0.95). Even that would be only about 1 / 30s instead of 1 / 10s. In my direct comparisons to the camera has, at the same ISO, a shortening of the exposure time by a factor of 2.2 in the result means that the images are exposed about the same. So rather 1 / 20s at Hyper Prime instead of 1 / 10s when Sony 1,8er.

The F-indication of the aperture is the focal length divided by the mechanical size of the aperture. This makes this number no indication of the loss of light within the optical system. The actual measured light intensity is the way indicated in some lenses with the T-visor, while Hyper Prime would be most T1,2 (calculated from the measured bleach Tung velocity factor 2.2).

Unlike the Sony 50mm F1.8 the Hyper Prime has no optical image stabilizer. Image stabilizers, although often overstated, because they can not compensate for moving objects such as people or water. However, image stabilizers are useful in many cases, especially if you shoot out of your hands. With a good stabilizer I have already photographed with 1 / 8s out of hand, if I had a few attempts. The much-vaunted brightness of lenses with an aperture less than one perspective therefore very strong. By no means keeps you so a night vision device in his hand. The lens is a little brighter, but nothing more.

For me important is the image characteristics of the lens and as the product breaks then the 5 star. Due to the large aperture of F0,95 together with the focal length of 50mm makes it a truly wonderful bokeh. From the Focus forth is obtained though a sharp image, at least within the rather narrow focus range. With a razor-sharp Zeiss lens but can not compare it. Edges are slightly dreamy even in maximum sharpness. Vignette I can not determine. Color fringing do not exist, not even in the bokeh, as in Handevision. Basically, the image of high quality. Anyway, have now been questioned me professional photographers, with which lens I would have made the image.

The build quality of the lens is generally high. The housing is made of metal, which ensures also contributes to the weight. The black coating makes me a slightly less durable impression than is the case with Sony lenses. I had problems, however, with the clamping screw for the bezel, which lies at first very difficult to solve. After a few times and I had the brass screw then turned off. Only the diaphragm is fixed on F0,95, apparently determining the lens. Other iris I shoot anyway rather with autofocus and sharper lenses. Otherwise I'm going to remove the screws on occasion stump. Sending in I do not want, because you only times again for weeks has nothing in his hand. In fact, I can not explain what you had in mind at the protruding brass button on the lens to me.

The manual iris is fine with me, since I photograph mostly anyway in Aperture mode (A). Manual focus then straining forward to a bit of time and prevents quick snapshots. The Hyper Prime me is therefore an objective for specific purposes, mainly portraits, artistic exposing objects in the narrow focal plane, and gadgets with the bokeh, especially when lights in the background are.

Conclusion: With the objective to obtain a truly wonderful lens, which belongs mainly in the category of "playful artist". For a bright fixed focal length for home use or not to bring the clearly more favorable SEL50F18 Sony.

Note: Thank you, if you express your appreciation for the effort and the time it takes to create this review by a positive evaluation. If anyone knows anything to improve, I am pleased with a comment, as I always like to learn something about it.
