The iPad as a reader

Apple iPad Wi-Fi Netbook (Personal Computers)

Customer Review

I have purchased the iPad after I use since October 2009, the Kindle as a reader and this example the FAZ refer. The Kindle cover has some great advantages: it is cheaper per month than that offered in Germany e-paper and there are no additional costs for the Internet connection (the iPad MicroSIM card) because the connection in the reader is built in and it costs nothing. However, the Kindle version has a serious drawback: The edition does not appear in the original page layout (images, there are not), but the article texts such as text files connected in series. Because you have to get used to as a reader only because the typical outline of a newspaper page is missing. I myself can live very well with this restriction, but can not imagine that it represents a negative knock-out criterion for many. For iPad I came for "The New Yorker", which in its quality unmatched American weekly magazine, which you can not relate to the Kindle as a German, but can probably be used with the iPad. For some weeks now I know the iPad as a reader and report in particular about:

The book collection is very low, unfortunately, in the German and in the English section and still can compete in any way with the offer from Amazon. As this summer four bestsellers published (Franzen, Freedom; MacEwan, Solar; Rachman, Imperfectionists and mantle, Wolf Hall) I could download my all except by Franzen about a 10-page excerpt on the Kindle, and later the three books (not so Franzen) without problems at a vglw. reasonable price to purchase the e-book. When Kindle, there is a notable feature: There English classics total expenditure available for dirt cheap, so all the works of Stevenson, Walter Scott, Henry James or Dickens for each $ 8. So you have this with you at all! The same is in iBook so not yet possible. Here are some modern titles available, but the offer is neither in English nor in German coverage. Positive I felt, however, that Apple has scanned hundreds of copyright-free classics computing, from Goethe through Descartes to Freud, which can be downloaded free of charge and will be presented in visually beautiful book-like reading style.

Newspapers and magazines are on the iPad, however a stunner: In New York you do not purchase a PDF file, but actually only the right to access an Internet database in which all books, including the latest, are available for access. This means that you can only read online. I felt it first as a significant restriction, but subsequently had my sentence correct: If you have purchased a 3G iPad and can log in from any location in Germany from a flat rate, you need not have a copy, the space wasted, but has everything you needs. The visual preparation of New York is very beautiful succeeded: You can scroll through the book, the content can be displayed in thumbs and let enlarge a page by double clicking on the screen. The reading of the very comprehensive article is also a visual delight, and: The subscription costs just under a third of the book subscriptions.

Of course I've got me a two-week free trial of the FAZ, in order to compare with the Kindle can. This newspaper is delivered daily as Pdf Dowonlad. Which reminds me of the download process the zip file for me appeared comparatively complicated as technical dilettante. Missing was a FAZ tool to download and unpack the AppStore. I had to first download the file as a PDF and import it into iTunes, then download a book on the iPad. As my (admittedly limited capabilities) probably should reflect the most users, you could certainly have something more comfortable it here. Visually, however, the newspaper is a stunner. The whole newspaper page appears on the iPad page (tablets on) and you can with the usual finger gestures (spread, tap) Cut in a pleasant read size larger. Anyone who has seen that the daily newspaper "snowed" morning via 3G on their own handy device comes, who can read it from there handy throughout the day, will never want to miss this experience. She reminded me of the first experiences with the word processor on a 8088, after I had worked with a typewriter! Since I refer the Kindle FAZ, I get the newspaper and often quite realize how much the classic newspaper format has been opposed in his awkwardness of reading in everyday situations. With the Kindle you can see the FAZ also in the US, Poland, France or Ireland (all tested by me) received as soon as possible.

Partly asked on this page, what you can use the iPad to. Perhaps these lines provide an answer. For the purchase of magazines, the iPad is worth a real recommendation. And no one would mind if he still can play a game of Go after reading; Even here, there is a great app.
