What ne pleasant surprise! But first things first: a game by the thrift store my confidence, and I erspäh a CD on which cover five old men with their instruments appear gathered on a Southern porch that look like the godfather of Mance Lipscomb and Compay Segundo somewhere arrived directly from the Cajuns or the precincts of New Orleans. So it seems.
"The Jolly Boys" - never heard the band name. First thought: Like the look m above these jacks be good. A gang, which has long since reached the retirement age. Then take a look at the back: just been published, and already landed in thrift? Was there someone disappointed because he thought the same as I? No Matter; the part is taken. The booklet bodes well: The instruments are steckdosenunabhänig: percussions, guitars, congas, banjo ... and besides, I'm now just awful curious what these jolly gentlemen with the musical business card of Johnny Cash, the Rolling Stones, the Doors, the Stranglers , Amy Winehouse and even some other projects.
At home I realize after the first three cycles, that I was wrong with my juicy musical arrangement. This, however, excited me like nothing good, because something like that here, I've never heard of. One might think, old blues, zydeco and bluegrass warhorse had discovered reggae and tried this new discovery with the United musicianship of half a century of popular songs from that one would typically find in very different musical drawers, as there would be for example: "Golden Brown", "Do It Again", "Riders on the Storm", "Ring of Fire", "Rehab", "You can not Always Get What You Want" or "nightclubbing" - just to name a few , The Jolly Boys play a veteran classics, as if the just been written up especially for them. No false reverence, no unsophisticated replay, and erstrecht no spasmodic pseudo creativity Devil come-out. And not only the boss and singer Albert Minott hear the retirement age, and although most pleasant: He makes it cozy, without ever being sappy ... "sappy" ?! - Are you kidding me? Are you serious when you say that! Minott is as jolly and musical on the qui vive as his colleagues. They can all together not only an incredible amount, are not only recorded for decades one another, no - which makes it easy a lot of fun, it sounds even a deaf man.

Meanwhile, I'm obviously smarter than the day before yesterday; the English Wikipedia and the website of the Jolly Boys share with knowing and know so much more than just that Errol Flynn was her devoted fan. Just recently I even know that there is a Jamaican music style called mento since the 30s, an early form of reggae, which are still clearly noted the African roots. What is certain is that so. I think my description but not bad, in all due modesty. With reggae, I can not be quite warm namely, because it seems to me to depart the necessary ear to distinguish nuances. But with blues in all its varieties and varieties I can start something.
And that's why I fell in love with this CD right away: blues harmonies in reggae and ska rhythms, while the occupation of the band with their guest musicians ever to bluegrass, ragtime Zydeco or recalls - depending on which instruments just call the shots have.
Variety is guaranteed, yet the album is from the first to the last bar of a piece of.
