Maceo's game is extremely varied when it comes to blowing technique. He knows how to vary like no other with a tremendous ease rhythm and pitch. Another feature is his musical ability to build an enormous tension with little played and much omitted tones. According to the motto: less is more. CD1 includes some classics that excellently fit naturally into a Big Band Instrumentation. Some pieces are a tribute to Ray Charles and sung by Maceo beautifully. On CD2 can be found Maceo known pieces from previous albums, but played here in Big Band formation, which substantially gives the dish more wealth and power. Highlights are the saxophone duel with Karolina Strass Meyer (to be or not to be), and the drum solo (pass the peas) from Dennis Chambers (Santana), both to be found on CD2 for me. Those looking for a cross section of Maceo's work, is certainly very well served by this double CD. And also important: this is a live recording, in which the participants can bring in their solos. This in turn evaluates the known tracks on enormously.
