Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (Paperback)

Customer Review

Foer's first novel "Everything is Illuminated" was great, but his second work "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" is simply a masterpiece and for me personally, the most beautiful, saddest, most moving, most hopeful and unsentimentalste book, what a long, long I time have read.
Protagonist of the novel is the nine year old Oscar Schell, desen father was killed in the attacks on September 11th. As he rummaged through the belongings of his father, Oscar is an envelope on the BLACK stands and contains one key. So he makes it his mission to find the right lock in New York, as he seeks out all individuals with the surname Black. On his walks through the city, he meets people and collects cope experiences that will help him with his grief and to find a piece inenren peace.

But this is just a plot of the novel Trang. Interposed are always letters of Oscars grandmother who tells her grandson the unglaulich tragically beautiful story of her life and of Oscars grandfather who has fallen silent after the bombing of Dresden and the death of his former lover and yourself before the birth of Oscar's father from the dust has made. His letters, the first from 1963 up to 2003, describe on a not really describable way life with its all emotional extremes and are for me the most sad-literary passages of the past decades. The highlight is, explains the phone call from Oscar mute grandfather to his grandmother, the first after 40 years, where he continued his motivations and feelings using the telephone keypad, each key is her yes for certain letters. On pages 269-271 we find the number code that it is definitely worth it to decrypt.

Even otherwise teeming "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" just before metanarratives elements. Again and again photos that have sometimes more, sometimes less to do with the plot, blank pages to represent emotional emptiness, a starry sky during a night scene and, as an absolute highlight, a small flipbook on the last 15 pages that and all wishes, hopes yearnings of the protagonists as well as the absurdity of human existence symbolizes.

Conclusion: Not only a book, but an event !!! Everyone who reads it, I'm sure, will benefit in irgeindeiner way of it!
