The housings are nearly identical, and the small dimensions, in particular the thinness adjusts camera in all my pockets, front and rear - that's great!
Moving from the S100 to the S120 was a good decision. The S120 is ready to work, the autofocus is just as fast and usually fail. Only the Zoom could be a little faster, but that's not a real shortage.
The autofocus is very fast and accurate in sufficient light and high-contrast subject. There will be dark, or there is not enough contrast in the subject, the AF suggests sometimes even fail. However, this is not only with this camera so, but in many compact. Therefore, I see this indeed as annoying but not as a problem of the S120. In wide-angle with open aperture of AF are more familiar than with telephoto in low light conditions. So if it gets a little darker, Lieger a piece to get closer to your subject, and remain on the wide angle of the lens.
The operation succeeded, just typical of an S model, the S100 has changed a lot, not really. However, the S120 now has a touchscreen, I find it very successful. I use it mainly to change the AF point. Simply tap the area of the motive, which it would focus and trigger. Perfect!
The S120 has no GPS to the S100. I find acceptable, I do not need GPS data in the image. But it has an integrated WLAN module, for example, to transfer images to a smartphone. This is super convenient because thus no wireless SD card more is needed. I use this feature quite often to time to upload a picture on the internet quickly.
The image quality of the S120 has been improved compared to the S100, this is probably the Digic processor 6 (against Digic 5 in the S100). Up to ISO 400 no problem, fine detail and virtually no noise. Up to ISO 800 the noise then increases slightly, fine details are something I'd say more blurred. I once 1600 and 3200 made experiments with ISO - certainly better than to have ever made a picture. Good to use as JPG directly from the camera to the Internet or little expression. How good it is a RAW image, I did not try, I am a friend of the JPG directly from the camera.
Besides the possibility of a recording a bit more or less to be exposed (exposure compensation), there is a matrix, center-weighted and spot metering (optional in center or on the selected AF point!), A variety of modes for the color (normal, increased, black and white, etc.) and some scene modes.
Deterioration over the S100 there yet: On the front of the small handle is no longer available. This could hold the S100 with the index and middle fingers of the right very well, the Canon has unfortunately painted, which I think is quite a shame.
My conclusion: Anyone looking for a well-equipped camera with good image quality on the go in your pocket size, is little better than the S120. For me, the perfect camera in terms of size, image quality and flexibility.
