I found this book by reading a review in a newspaper, and as I am a fan of pub I rushed it! This book summarizes a number of pubs, the oldest date back to the early 20th century, but the majority are American advertisements dating mostly from the 50s and 60s I was amused, surprised, shocked or even downright scandalized particularly before pubs touting alcohol or firearms for kids! It is absolutely amazing to see such things, and I ask myself whether these are real commercials or rather hoaxes, so it's huge. I pass over the misogynistic or racist pubs when we see certain commercials on TV currently, we find that the mindset has not changed much. Housewives under 50 is still considered a gourd without much brains. Political correctness is past for racist pubs, but we must admit that "colored people" contained in pubs are there for the "cultural minority" that's for TV and film. Going back to the book, I found it interesting, but I would have preferred a sociological study a bit further than a few lines of introduction at the beginning of chapter, but on the other hand, I do not think sociology is the aim of this book is rather to distract readers and perhaps also to do some eles react. I would also have liked to see more European advertising and newer: those of the 70s and 80s, some were well worth their weight cacaouettes! A book to be enjoyed like a cone of popcorn at the movies!
