The resurrection of Chuck Schuldiner

Savage Land (Audio CD)

Customer Review

Deluxe Edition (incl. Bonus tracks)

One could "Savage Land" course as total rip-off of "Death" in the creative period between "Scream Bloody Gore" and (a little) "Human" denote where predominantly "Spiritual Healing" was quoted - because here you can hear at all corners and ends pretty much all Death classics this time out ... and did not know you better, would you Schuldiner on vocals suspect (Harvey's really on it)!

The (albeit rather stupid) Cover designed by Ed Repka, and even the lettering of the band name has striking similarities to the original.

The excerpt from an interview with Matt Harvey "im sure theres a few chucks of riffs we havent twisted and re-invented yet, haha!" also shows that the "similarities" are entirely intentional, and the disk can be viewed as a tribute.

It is then but a little more than just a plagiarism - because so perfect that no one has to my knowledge hingekriegt. In addition, the occupation quite high class, because Harvey (Exhumed - Grunts, guitar) has with Daniel Gonzalez (Possessed, lead guitar), Gus Rios (ex-Malevolent Creation) and bassist Robin Mazen (Derketa, quite blatant Doom Death band, in the way also plays Mary Bielich which has already served in "Novembers Doom" and "Penance" the bass, but now switched to guitar!) verammelt very experienced and good musicians around him.

The solos of Gonzalez are endgenial, which are by James Murphy in every way, and justify alone already buying the plate!
This has contributed a guest solo even when "Closed Casket" - this song I call here, but not the only reason why a face-off tip, because the first basic riff is an absolute hammer, and does not sound like Death! Other highlights include the title song, "Hideous", and the very impressive "Demonized".

Otherwise - a board chasing the other, the breaks are set class, Slow-Parts loosen the songs, and the version I present a few days ago, yet there are two cover versions as bonus tracks, which were also very well done:

Land Of No Return (Death - if I had not thought ;-)) and Black Magic (Slayer).

Lack autonomy I prefer but still from a star; a little more innovation would not have hurt - but I had, apart from the "Hail Of Bullets" Outputs times, for over 20 years is not as much fun at a "old-school" death metal disc - these are then 8, 5 out of 10!
