A book that is older (perhaps the author would have altered its analysis after September 11), but is a real reference on geopolitics, particularly in the area of the former Soviet Union. Assumptions are often relevant and proved for many of them. The presentation of the situation of the various states of disintegration of the USSR is very fair: a Russia weakened in search of his lost empire, a Ukraine torn between the European and Russian spheres, Central Asia and changing China, whose growth is poised to slow down, etc. A useful and clear book, which is a state of the world scene in 1997.
