A dramatic turn of events (Audio CD)

Customer Review

What was not all speculation on the forums and in the huge fan base of this unique band, therefore in these lines (almost) not a single word to change the drummer. To me sounds' Dramatic Turn of Events' very strong after the DT masterpieces from the '90s,' Images and Words', 'Awake' and above all also 'Scenes From A Memory' and is therefore less dramatic than the album title can be expected. In the 00s decade DT were significantly more effort to complexity, always something driven. Probably indeed the clear influence of Portnoy. For fans who adore the early work more, with the new album probably true a long secret wish. So I feel at least for me, they sound the same again. Still playful and complex, but more compact and harmonious, with a variety of catchy hooks in fact almost every song and not as partially overloaded. Therefore, full marks. Followers who worship rather the development of the last decade will probably be rather disappointed. But most important, the songs:

ON THE BACKS OF ANGELS. Already known, gives a good taste of what is to come.

Build me up, break me down. One of the slightly more aggressive songs, very compact. The solos are technical brilliance, the melody awesome. The early first peak. Whoever listens to the plate while driving should rather ask here on the hard shoulder, the Drive and the dynamics could be a bit too big.

LOST NOT FORGOTTEN. What a tour de force! The song begins with aptly Hufgeräuschen and is a true ride. After a piano intro DT show their metal side as the 'Train of Thouhts', interrupted only by a YES same midsection. LaBries voice is very powerful, driving the song to the grand finale. For listening while driving the recommendation of Track 2 ;-) applies.

THIS IS LIFE A very spherical number, to breathe. Class guitar parts at the beginning and again at the end with a variation. James sings fabulous as ever on this album. Memories of 'Another Day' come and go. The song is catchy as the two previously opposing, and therefore radio friendly. Perhaps the best tune of the album. And thus is the perfect breather for the next two epics.

BRIDGES IN THE SKY. The first of two Elfminuten epic. Can it still does not capture properly the toughest rhythm part of the album, but very catchy in the chorus, a metalisches Monster Song. The melody is accompanied by another excellent passage in the second part of the song. Truly 'proggy', even if I do so like that word, no note in the ten-minute works for nothing.

OUTCRY. The pace is slightly curbed, an epic as the beginning of her career, with a wonderful chorus that gives me a shiver as 'Pull Me Under' on the back. The main theme will be elaborated and refined by Petrucci and on. It's just fun to follow and listen to the. GROSS!

Far from Heaven A Ballad of James and Jourdan, strings accompanied pure acoustic and piano and, very melodramatic. To breathe after the epic predecessor. If the song manages to Live program, I see engumschlungene couple on open air venues that dreamy look in his eyes. Even if the outstanding lyrics are more melancholy and gloomy.

BREAKING ALL ILLUSIONS A masterpiece, the longest piece and the first piece with a text (thank you: - Myung years Rocking, blustering beginning, a beautiful chorus but the highlight is the iinstrumentale middle part He is calling all the spirits out... that DT have long gone effort so intense, Yes, Rush, Pink Floyd. Here the old-fashioned progressive element is zelebiert, to kneel.

BENEATH THE SURFACE A wonderful acoustic ballads, how they DT yes pinched for years, closes the album. Reminiscent of 'Take away the Pain' a little, non-ballads friends are forewarned.

Wow! Many Killers (Build me up, break me down; BREAKING ALL ILLUSION; THIS IS LIFE; OUTCRY), no Fillers - except perhaps Far from Heaven, the well parked between two class tracks does not really stand really negative but. Add to that the usual erstklassische production and the re-genesis voice of LaBrie.

I wish the album much so that it fans not too much splits as it might for some a small step could be back. For me it's a self-contained DT masterpiece, most similar 'Awake' with which as so often have to be let compare the successor albums.

UPDATE after 8 weeks: The board "work" still has not worn off. Listen straight during the morning work BREAKING ALL ILLUSIONS. Thus an effect I had long gone when a DT album. And the view of comments, I have come out myself. Yes, I am a fanboy. Yes, I adore this band for their musicality. And if Fanboy means that I do not have to analyze to death the music until the last syncope, but rather simply can be easily act, then I'm a fanboy like ;-)
