Maybe it's because I've been waiting for this book for four years and I therefore had to high expectations: I find that "An Echo in the Bone" (or dt "The Echo of Hope" - unfortunate translation by the way.) The weakest of the Outlander series so far. You should also know the other books and the Lord-John-novels, otherwise you have it with this book probably very difficult. There are four storylines: Brianna / Roger (in the 20th century.), Jamie / Claire, Lord John and William, but the Jamie / Claire-share is felt the least (I have the pages are not numbered) and also the least interesting. The book begins still good and promising, has in the middle part lengths, but at the end the pace attracts so (even worse than in "A Breath of Snow and Ashes") that additional 200 pages would have done very well to him! At the end of quite nasty Cliffhanger are also installed and too many loose threads, so I have put away very unsatisfied. I also miss the slapstick of the other books. SPOILER WARNING! I find many passages of action in this book is not very conclusive (uncharacteristically for D. Gabaldon actually), but the worst is probably the presentation by Claire Jamie 'putative death! Besides, I can not understand how Jenny Fraser Murray Lallybroch can leave after the death of Ian allegedly holds nothing there! (What about their children and grandchildren ?!) I can only hope that the next book 1. the last book of the saga is (eventually one should let it go) and 2 better than this!
