I own a lot of WD hard drives - they were so far always very reliable, and the price / performance ratio has also always fit. With the brand WD I am very happy - but this product has very disappointed me, see in the following text the reasons to do so.
Two reasons have prompted me to buy the My Cloud (in the 3TB version):
- Central storage in the whole house
- Access from iTunes possible
Unfortunately, the reasons for the deductions are completely unnecessary in small, but extremely annoying details or misunderstood in function descriptions:
1.)
The hard drive is running (as already written several times here) continuously without shutting down after a while of inactivity. I have as a first action after the purchase (early April 2014) updated directly to the latest firmware, but to no avail. This means that I have the hard disk automatically when not in use manually power down (= plug), I do not really want to, because the hard drive is well hidden in a corner in a small room. That alone is at least 1 point deduction with the cautious hope that at some point an appropriate firmware appears.
Much more important, and even a __richtige Enttäuschung__ was here:
2.)
My iPad can __nicht__ access the music stored on the My Cloud via iTunes !!! After a few trials and research on the net my fear was confirmed: It's impossible! (If you like, will take place this well-made English Review a second opinion: [...]).
Because that was really my main reason for buying, my least 2 points deduction is worth. The disk loses for me the most value. The reason is probably that the iOS (iPad, iPhone) to another protocol for the transmission of data required as a "normal" Mac or PC.
This also means that the inclusion of music in the "normal" iTunes on Mac and PC of course is possible. These deal with the My Cloud as a normal network drive, and the access is possible without any problems.
And here is a point of criticism with regard to the marketing of these hard disk: WD implying (original quote from the WD website) "supports iTunes" and hereinafter also the Installation Guide "to access iTunes on your personal cloud" that for all systems is of course possible, iTunes support. In addition, we read again and again the word "iTunes Server", which also suggests a complete support.
Think again! (What I know now)
Can accuse you WD nothing: There is nowhere explicitly something along the lines of "you can use the stored songs from your My Cloud as iTunes playlist on your iPad play." So we must accuse myself, I did not read the description properly .. ,
I would, however, have wished that WD had written something in the nature, at least as a note / footnote: "Note: A direct involvement in the form of a playlist in iTunes is currently not possible to on iPad and iPhone."
Maybe I would have bought the hard drive anyway, and just one point deduction given (wg. Continuous operation).

*** Update 25/01/2015: downgraded to 1 star. Justification.

I really tried everything and had patience of a saint, but now this is the end:
- The firmware is up to date
- Access of the same devices / locations on the WLAN or the router to which the hard drive is connected via cable, works perfectly (Internet, Watch Ever, iTunes Store, ...)
- See also the comments below the review for the classification of discontent
The hard drive is still unable, without errors and disconnections 5 GB (or less) to be transferred in one go. In the moment in which I write this, even the simple deletion of files 10 ("Make sure that you are connected to the network is ..." failed because the connection is again interrupted. This is the hard disk de facto unusable in its role as wireless hard drive. as an automatic backup solution to remain silent on the use of all.
I'm going to shut down the hard drive. Maybe I'll buy an external 3.5 "hard drive enclosure and installing the WD there, then the purchase was at least not totally unnecessary.
I'm sorry that it has come to - I was really patient and have often turned a blind eye two all.
