In 304 pages, Michael Goodwin and Dan E. Burr expose BD, all you need to know about the economy.
The book consists of eight chapters:
- The invisible hand of the distant past to 1820
- Full steam: 1820-1865
- The power of money: 1865-1914
- Everything crumbles: 1914-1945
- Weapons and butter: 1945-1966
- The age limit: 1966-1980
- The revolt of the rich: 1980-2001
- Today's world: after 2001
Goodwin from a simple observation: "We are citizens of a democracy Most subjects on which we vote within the economy it is our responsibility to understand what we are voting on..."
With this reflection, he chose a fashion accessible to all: comics.
We perceive the potential danger of this choice outrageous simplifications, ellipses ...
Nay!
Goodwin wrote an economics course that reminds clearly and simply, the major concepts, theories decrypts, unearths some thoughts that the ideologues of all stripes are careful not to remember.
For example, for Adam Smith, it is obviously not forget to quote him on the division of labor, competition and the free market. But it also stresses that, contrary to followers of physiocrats let full, Smith set out the limits of that market and requested law enforcement, border protection or guarantee of public goods.
He does not fail to point that the one erected in divinity by proponents of market-king, many expressed distrust of the capitalists which he castigated the "spirit of monopoly" and that he recalled that 'beyond an acceptable level of profit "no society can prosper and be happy in which most of the members are poor and miserable."
Yet another example: the catastrophic presidency of Ronald Reagan. It restores some voluntarily set truths under the carpet by those who have benefited from this terrible collective hallucination. Yes, Reagan increased taxes (but not all, of course) and detonated public spending including his delusional "Star Wars" what America and therefore the world is still paying today.
Besides an incredible erudition built with blows of furious readings, Goodwin has put into perspective the evolution of our systems and thus illuminate the continuum and essential fractures.
Over the periods thus scrolled:
- The must economists (Ricardo, Marx, Keynes, Marshall, Samuelson, Galbraith, Hayek or Friedman);
- The essential facts. Goodwin describes the main stages of historical development (development of international trade, customs and techniques, the impact of steam, wars ...), wearing his look, more leaning on the economic history US, from American independence (birth trusts, crossover progressive ideas and theories deadly -for-errant of less government) ...
One remains amazed at the incredible stupidity (persistent) of Wilson and Presidents Reagan, revolted face some sickening manifestations of cynicism ... because despite a general trend of developed economy to adopt the modes come across the Atlantic or across the Channel, it is difficult to find them at home, with a character also said.
But how can we not feel concerned by this relentless description of the ravages of bureaucracy, offline management of realities, of the dispersion of powers, the ravages associated with absurdities of military-industrial complex, the "structural adjustments" of the IMF, to explosion of bubbles followed public infusion of limits to growth ...
How not to wonder when Alan Greenspan of the Fed Chairman said in 2008: "Most of the time, we were wrong"?
How not to recognize the smug look worn continuously on all those who doubt the benefits of an unsupervised marketplace, poverty of the rich, because governments are always the problem, never the solution, and importantly, who believe that Keynes's prophecy was fulfilled: "When the capital development of a country becomes the by-product of the activities of a casino, the job is likely to be hurt?"
Attention you understand that Goodwin is not a member of the Tea Party. He has an opinion he defends, but so far he is not in favor of a sprawling state or the advent of socialism.
Its position is measured and documented and it brings a breath of fresh air when suffocating under the fumes of "There Is No Alternative" continuous jet exhaled by those who have the financial power and the main benefits.
I would be remiss to ignore the extraordinary work of his partner Dan E. Burr. Its design B & W is a best readability. Serving the demonstration Goodwin, it brings a sense of division that gives this comic as an educational playful character.
Playful, Economy, this "obscure science"?
Yes.
Head Doeuvre reserved for all.
