To The Moon (computer game)

Customer Review

Some time ago the German release, this game was already available on the official website for download, hence the rapid rating (just so no one is surprised). The small indie forge Freebird Games succeed with To The Moon in my view, a big surprise. Although one can discuss genre affiliations and I hate to use the term adventure, it is pure content seen one of the best games I know. Those who want to save my long text, can move to the same CONCLUSION :).

Our central pawns are Dr. Rosalene and Dr. Watts, two employees of a company that is no longer responsive dying fee fulfills the last wish. To make this possible, they move in their memory about special memories back step by step and try to find a suitable early stage to redirect existing requirements as to achieve the desired result occurs as a kind of fictional consequence (the memories are turned inside out). Johnny - the latest customer - wants the moon. Not an easy task, especially since there are also a lot of things with regard to him and his wife, who have to be deciphered. Without unnecessary to go into detail, I think it is a touching story. Tragic as romantic. We are moving in phases, although bordering on the kitsch, but for me it remained at an acceptable level.

Who, for example, the film VERGISSMEINNICHT! like, or who finds the narrative constructs of screenwriters Steven Moffat as attractive, which could be right here. For my taste, the story is dramatically wisely thought through and nested complex. The content starting position is exciting and unspent, with potential for further episodes (the story is but itself). Towards the end of the first act (of three) I thought for a moment, the game could degenerate into a routine. This was not like that. With Chapter 2, the plot revolves, and especially in the final third experienced memories are previously moved by new information in a different light and the tragedy you begin to understand the full extent only. I was this realization even tasted tears (that happens otherwise rare me). Unfortunately, reading the German translation is not as good as the action would have earned it. My positive impression did not diminish. The characters I was also quite palpable and the loosening humorous elements in between I liked. The music sounds nice and contributes much to the emotional states and mood.

The low budget is quickly apparent. The graphics (RPG Maker says hello) looks retro and the lack of voice acting is a clear sign. Many will not taste. Visually, it looks like a RPG (role playing game) from old SNES / Megadrive times and comes in obbligato isometric perspective. Playful but it fits only partly into this category, and for a real adventure lacking real mystery. Adventure out RPG ago ... I would describe it as an interactive story. Exploration is the focus of the gameplay. In a manageable area it is in each section of the game to discover some interaction points (which are not hard to find) in order to make central key memories available, which then take us to increasingly early moments in memory. In between, dissolving some sliding puzzles (whose usefulness could scrutinize, but OK). With some people out of memory you can communicate, the dialogues allow little room. Towards the end follows a skill deposit. The is a nice change, but again can not fail you. After challenges keep close to 0 and the story proceeds linearly, it is bearable, that only 3 reservoir levels are available plus an automatic Score. On the other hand, I would have some moments like looked at again. The point and click type control is convenient, but it does not allow much freedom of action. You can maneuver the character with the mouse anywhere and each click a few things and that's it really. In addition, there is no real asset and we can not specifically use objects together. Was for me but that was all not as dramatic as the story can compensate for a lot.

My conclusion: TO THE MOON I found excelling particularly in view of the story. The soulful music supports the soulful mood also very good. Clear the puzzles are virtually non-existent, and so, not only the graphics look retro. Nevertheless, it conveys an atmosphere as I was allowed to experience rare in a game. Of course, you could face called problem areas loose a point preview (especially if one strictly considered Adventure and / or RPG), but I take the liberty not to do it in this review. Subjectively, I was very pleased. After all, I was 4.5 hours excellently entertained for little money and deeply touched. Who still is not safe, should look at the website of Freebird Games maybe. There you can try the game as Trial for an hour (without any other limitation). I think it's worth it, but see for yourself.

PS This was my last time being Games review of Amazon and to the moon here is somehow a nice ending for something :).
